Well I wanted to share my thoughts on Rogue One at the other place but since it is taking a dump right now I'll go here
+ Stunning Visuals (although 3D is not worth it IMO)
+ Story is pretty solid
+ Amazing 3rd act
+ K-2SO is my new favorite character
+ Vader doing business
+ A very un-disney like ending
+ But also a great transition into A New Hope
+ Introduces a bunch of interesting characters...
-...But have hardly any development in the film and was hard to get invested in them
- No opening crawl. I get the reasons why but it felt weird without it
- Movie took a while to get going (but 3rd act was worth the wait)
- The CGI Tarkin was a bit jarring but nothing worth bitching about like the rest of the internet has been
I went into Rogue with tempered expectations as it being a movie where you know the story is going to end. But the movie blew my expectations out of the water. I have seen it twice in theaters and plan to hit it up at least one more before it leaves, and will buy the Blu-Ray the day it comes out.
It is not a perfect film by any means; it took a while to get going and seemed to try and cram as much info about places and people right off the bat. The story did give us some great characters but didn't really get any development. Even Jyn felt really flat even with her joining the rebellion and finding her father only to lose him.
However....that 3rd act was epic. The action was great but not overwhelming. Points to Disney for not having a touchy feeling ending and making it much darker. Plus you can't go wrong with Vader even in his limited scenes.
I do want to say the talk around CGI Tarkin is way over the top. I do agree it got to the uncanny valley thing with him but it wasn't enough to turn me off. I felt including him was important considering his role in A New Hope. Leia was spot on (RIP Carrie Fisher)
I'm excited that this film worked after all the bumps on the road it took (re-shoots, concerns, etc.) as stand alone stories now have the potenal to expand the Star Wars Universe in great ways. As far as ranking, I would put it #3 behind Empire and New Hope
9/10
