I got to the venue fifteen minutes before the first act Void Vision was supposed to go on and there were literally eleven people there. Thankfully, unlike at RiFF RaFF a few weeks ago (who had similar turnout at a nine hundred capacity venue) the Velvet Underground would be lucky if a two hundredth person could fit through the door, should the day ever arrive. She ended up going on a half hour later than posted and the crowd had quickly swelled to around forty people. But there was some wicked synth music playing over the house P.A. so I didn't mind waiting so much. And once she got on I cared even less. She was fucking awesome throwback 1980's synth dance and I won't lie: that music interests me more these days than a lot of metal does. Her vocals could've used a little work but once she layered more effects on them they were fucking awesome too.
I listened to Adult. a little bit back in 2003 when I discovered this college radio station in Toronto that somehow had an FM dial address and a signal as good as most corporate radio stations. There was this LGBT show on Wednesday afternoons called ‘Packin’ Attitude’ that played a lot of cool electro-synth music like Peaches, ProCon, Ladytron, Adult. and many more I haven't heard for years but really, really liked. I was looking for something tonight to fill out night three in a four night stretch of shows and it came down to this or some death metal bands I really had no interest in. They had some really insane, heavy broken beats going on tonight. It was fucking LOUD! But as I expected the vocals ruined it a lot of the time. She had some cool effects on her vocals but bad vocals are bad vocals no matter how much you bury them. Their songs ranged from really cool to really bad. I Should Care, Today and Inclined to Vomit were just abrasive noise that were almost too much. Then songs like Hand to Phone, Pressure Suit and whatever the eighth song was were really good. They were a cool band to see live and it’s a scene that is very alien to me so it was neat to see something totally different than I’m used to. But the opening act blew them away.
