HO-LEE-CRAP! I'm two days late... but 13 years ago I went to my first "big" show. I had been to numerous shows before, but only every saw local bands, never any big named bands. So when some friends of mine that I met were opening for Death Angel and Metal Church I decided to finally see what a "real" concert was all about. I was only 14 or 15 at the time, and here I was, seeing some Metal legends.... and barely even knowing who they were
Upon looking for the setlists for this show I found a bootleg "album" a guy put up for download of Metal Church's set! SO COOL!
I'll do my best to recall the show....
The show opened with a local band called Phoenix in Twilight. I remember not being too big on them since I didn't know who they were, but the singer of another band playing this show went on stage with them and did a song and I thought that was the coolest thing ever.
After them were Seattle Underground Punk/Metal legends, and one of my favorite local bands to this day, The Braindead! The Braindead are still playing live to this day, but back then they were in top form and were THEE band to see. I don't have their set, but I can imagine it consisted of...
- Cum Shot
- Blinded By Greed
- No Radio Song
- In League With Satan
- Torn
According to this site I found, the next band were Thrash/Groove Metal titans from here, Agony of Deceit. They were really about to break out in a huge way around this time, but unfortunately broke up soon after this show, only to return for a reunion show some years later, but never play again. Their lead guitarist (who also played in the Braindead for a while) passed away recently . They tore the house down, and for the locals, got one of the best reactions, but for some reason their set got cut short and they didn't get a chance to play their big hit, "Wage Slave".
After AOD were Drown Mary. Drown Mary was a band that broke out pretty big when they got signed to a smaller label called Hawino Records, but that label went under, Drown Mary lost some members, got some replacements, but it wasn't the same. They broke up somewhat recently (I think?) and everyone is doing their own thing. They were one of the bigger local bands and had a huge following. I don't recall much from this set other than it being awesome!
Finally... METAL CHURCH! I had no clue who they were other than knowing they were from Seattle. I was front and center (as I always was back then) headbanging, throwing the horns, and yelling randomly every time their singer put the microphone to me. Listening back to the bootleg I found.... this show seemed to be a bit rough, obviously they had monitor issues, but for being a little kid in High School I had no idea and loved every second of them.
-Ton of Bricks
-Start the Fire
-Leave Them Behind
-Watch the Children Pray
-Battalions
-Gods of Wrath
-Madman's Overture
-Beyond the Black
-Metal Church
After Metal Church were the headliners of the night, and I believe this was their CD Release show too... Death Angel! Being a wee lad I honestly didn't care for them. I THINK I stayed for their whole set, but I may had left halfway through. The music was fine, but I just never got the vocals back then for some reason. Nowadays, I enjoy them much more, not a fan-fan, but when I saw them with Soulfly or Cavalera Conspiracy I really loved them.
-Thrown to the Wolves
-5 Steps of Freedom
-Voracious Souls
-3rd Floor
-Thicker Than Blood
-Disturbing the Peace
-Evil Priest
-The Devil Incarnate
-Land of Blood
-Bored
-Mistress of Pain
-Seemingly Endless Time
Encore:
-The Ultra-Violence
-Famine
-Kill as One
So yeah.... the first "big" show I ever saw! Good times.
