Aw yea got another flashback from 2009. And this was one of my favorites. This was the aptly titled NIN|JA tour at the beautiful Starlight Theater in Kansas City on a gloomy grey rainy day. The tour was Jane's Addiction, NIN & Street Sweeper Social Club (remember them?).
SSSC (no way I'm typing the full name every time) was the opening band and having never got to see RATM I figured this was the closest I'd ever get to see them. I absolutely loved SSSC, this is the band that I would've been more ok seeing stick around compared to Prophets from an original song aspect. SSSC had a fun 7 song set that touched on almost all of the stronger tracks off of their s/t album although I probably would've picked a few different tracks and picked a different closing song but otherwise it was a great opening set and good start to the show.
Fight!Smash!Win!
Somewhere In the World It's Midnight
Paper Planes
The Oath
100 Little Curses
Promenade
Nobody Moves (Till We Say Go)
In a huge mismatch NIN was the next band. Not Jane's but NIN. In no universe should NIN ever have to open for Jane's Addiction. The positive side of this was being able to leave earlier. I only got to see NIN twice but I can tell you from everyone I've seen nobody puts on a better show than NIN. I saw them in an arena show the previous November (2008) & that was unlike any show I'd ever seen. The stage effects, the LED lights, just an amazing visual show. Now I would be seeing a more stripped down show. And they were just as awesome with no effects. Set was killer as NIN sets generally are. I'm a big Year Zero fan. That's an album I wished would've been better represented, and even better Trent made it known in advance Closer would not be played and I was more than happy with that. Retire Hurt so these sensitive frat boy bros can't sing it out loud and we'd have a perfect set. I'm happy that NIN is back recording and touring. I hope I can see them again & anyone who hasn't should do it atleast once. I first went in not being a fan and left a huge fan.
Now I'm Nothing
Terrible Lie
Discipline
March of the Pigs
The Frail
The Wretched
Piggy (Nothing Can Stop Me Now)
The Becoming
Burn
Gave Up
Echoplex
The Fragile
The Way Out Is Through
Wish
Survivalism
Physical (You're So)
The Hand That Feeds
Head Like a Hole
Hurt
And to close out the evening was Jane's Addiction. I have never been a fan and I have never really understand the draw of them. I think I saw 3-4 songs and wasn't really feeling it. It was raining/misting all day and we had enough. We also went to the KC zoo (the 2 places basically share parking lots) and was feeling a little run down too. From videos I later saw it looks like Perry slipped on the stage and fell right on his ass mid song. That's my biggest regret of leaving early.
Three Days
Whores
Ain't No Right
Pigs in Zen
Then She Did...
Mountain Song
Had a Dad
Been Caught Stealing
Ted, Just Admit It...
Ocean Size
Summertime Rolls
Stop!
Jane Says
As a child of 90s music this was a phenomenal show. SSSC was awesome, NIN is one of the best live shows out there & Perry Farrell fell on his ass.
