I made it to the Soybomb around halfway into Goth Girls set. He/they were added at the last minute (literally) as I was about to leave for the show. Had I known that I’d have left a few minutes earlier to catch him. I saw him opening for Fuck the Facts a few months ago and at the time it was just him growling, vomiting and yelling into the microphone with a bunch of distortion pedals. This time he had some other guy playing heavily distorted open bass notes. So it was actually better this time. But ten minutes was more than enough.
The next band was a bit more musical. A drone band called New Positions. The guitarist just leaned his guitar on his amp for the whole set and moaned vocals into the microphone while the bass player actually played some notes. They also had a heavily electronic drum machine playing over it and a lot of added electronic samples from the singer/guitarists phone. Sounds strange but I actually thought they were fucking incredible. I could have lived without the vocals but the drones and chaos was so awesome. One of the better performances I’ve seen all year and I’d love to see these guys again.
After that was a band that actually played songs called Fresh Snow. I’ve never listened to Mogwai but I think they sounded like a more aggressive Mogwai. They reminded me also of those ‘Desert Sessions’ albums Josh Homme used to put out with more post-rock influences. They got a little boring to me by the end and it felt like they’d been on for an hour when it had only been thirty minutes but when they hit their really high “highs” they were really good. And their intro was really cool too.
This is the third time I’ve seen Big|Brave and the first not as an opener. They get better each time I see them and this was no exception, probably because I’ve gotten their album and am more familiar with their songs. But the night was running pretty late and they played a really short set. Sometimes short sets are good and longer sets can get boring but this one seemed to get cut-off too early and could have gone on for longer. I was a little disappointed by that. They’re touring with Sunn 0))) right now and I think they have to be in St. Louis tomorrow, so I can understand them needing to get out of there since it was almost 1:30 in the morning. But, Sunn 0))) is playing here NEXT Friday as a part of some festival so I have no idea why they decided to split up and play Toronto on different weekends.

It was my first time going to Soybomb. I thought the place was awesome. It’s in a small loft above a store or something and it used to be a skate park. It still even has the half-pipe and the bands play in it. The sound is fantastic though. I’d love to go there again. It would be awesome to see a hardcore show there. I also met up with metalsetlists.com poster Ryan (Sign of the Hammer) right after Goth Girls set. I usually go to shows by myself so it was nice to catch up and have someone to talk to between sets for a change.

When I did my year end list of top concerts in 2016 New Positions took the second spot. I barely remember their set but I remember I just really liked them.
Fresh Snow have played a lot of shows in Toronto since but I haven't bothered to go to any. I'd like to but I'm in no rush.
I've heard Big|Brave have a new album coming out some time in 2017. And they ended up touring with Sunn 0))) again in early 2017.
I have't seen Goth Girl since.
This show was the only time I ever made it out to Soybomb. It closed its doors in early 2017.
