Type O Negative
Support: Fear Factory, Powerman 5000, Drain STH

Venue: the Warehouse in Toronto, Ontario
This was one of the very first concerts I ever went to and at the time Type O Negative was my favorite band. It was also the first time I went to the Warehouse in Toronto, a place that pretty much every concert I went to from 1997-1999 was at. It’s hard for me to remember a lot of it. I do remember that there were not many people there. And by not many I mean the venue was probably two thousand capacity and there were maybe eight hundred to a thousand people there at peak.
Drain STH came out and there were a couple hundred people there tops. They were all right. I was just so young and excited that anyone could’ve been playing and I would’ve been having a blast. The thing I always remember about them is how hot the singer and drummer were and that the bass player was pretty hot too. And the guitar player…had brown hair.
Powerman 5000 was next and I had their CD and was really into that KoRn nu-metal sound at the time. I don’t have the CD anymore but I remember it being okay. I have no idea what they played exactly but I remember Organizized, 20 Miles to Texas 25 to Hell, Tokyo Vigilante #1, Standing 8 and a few others from that album. I’m really surprised when I read that this band is still around, albeit with only one original member.
Fear Factory was a huge bonus for me going to this show. At the time they were probably the heaviest band I listened to, I may have even considered them death metal in my youth. I’d only heard Demanufacture at this point and didn’t even know they had another album. They put on a phenomenal show and did a great job of just getting everyone pumped up. I never mosh, but this was one of the very few times I did. I can remember them opening their set with Demanufacture and also playing Self Bias Resistor, Zero Signal and Replica off Demanufacture but they had to play a few more. But what I remember more than anything was them playing Scumgrief, Scapegoat and Martyr. Three songs I’d never heard in my life and they blew me away. I ran out and got Soul of A New Machine the next day and was more than a little disappointed that the sound wasn’t the same as Demanufacture or what I’d heard the night before. Scumgrief had some wicked guitar harmonics during the verses live that weren’t present on the album version. And during the verses of Martyr live Burton whispered the vocals rather than whisper/growled them. But Fear Factory FLOORED me that night.
It was really hard for Type O Negative to follow up Fear Factory in my opinion, even though they were my favorite band. I was so exhausted that I didn’t even know they were playing Prelude to Agony until I asked my friend after the show what they played. And it’s really hard for me to remember anything else except that the place really cleared out after Fear Factory (to the point where I don’t think there were seven hundred people there), we were right up on the right side of the stage in front of Josh Silver and the guy behind me who was totally wasted and sang along (off-key) to every…single…song. The cover of Light My Fire was really cool and Too Late: Frozen is always better live than on album thanks to Peters vocal delivery.

Follow up:
I saw Type O Negative live one more time a couple of years later on the tour for World Coming Down. I still consider them one of my all-time favourite bands and miss Peter Steele so much.
I'd see four bands live before I saw Fear Factory that night. I've seen hundreds now. I wonder how I'd feel about that performance if I were to see it again today? I strongly doubt it would be a top ten live performance now but I'll never see it again so I'll never know.
I think Powerman 5000 are still soldiering on.
Drain STH released a second album in 1999 (I think) and were broken up before 2002.
The Warehouse closed a couple of years ago and as of today there's a condo being constructed where it once stood. I miss that place.
