Why do I keep finding myself in these places?
So the "Unsound Festival" is a small part of the "Luminato Festival", a Toronto hipster art festival that I've never heard of that's celebrating its ten year anniversary this year. I’ve never heard of any of the bands that were playing. I just wanted to see Sunn 0))). It was held in an old, abandoned factory by Lake Ontario, just a bit southwest of the infamous Sound Academy. I don't have anything against art but that wasn't what interested me today. There were a lot more people than I expected to see but I think only a portion of those in attendance were there for the music, and even less for Sunn 0))) probably. So after walking around watching people take pictures of things I see everyday working in construction I found one of the music areas of the show.
I think the first act I saw was Kara-Lis Coverdale. She played a harmless set of electronic ambient. It wasn't too bad at first but got pretty boring for me after forty minutes.
After that I went to the side stage and caught the last fifteen seconds of some techno band who sounded like something I actually would have liked. I liked the side stage better because it was in a room and was a little warmer.
I stayed in the Side Room and I think I saw Amnesia Scanner. Whoever it was was really cool. Kinda like an angrier Aphex Twin.
After that I headed over to the main stage and met up with Ryan for Sunn 0))). Attila Csihar was there with them doing vocals. They played for about an hour and a half and while it wasn’t the loudest show I’ve ever seen it was by far the heaviest. I’m not just saying this to be cool but it’s been almost two hours now and my ears are still rumbling. I was surprised that their set wasn’t as guitar heavy. If anything Attila was more the “star” of the show than the two members of the band. It starting with Attila doing ten or so minutes of his vocals, then the guitars faded in (which was awesome) and then they did probably twenty minutes of guitar drone. After that there was a long segment of Attilas vocals plus a low, throbbing keyboard drone that lasted at least a half an hour. Then the guitars finally came back for another ten-minute drone before Attila came back out in his awesome armor for another twenty-minute finale. I’ve never been a huge Mayhem fan and I don’t think Attila is the best vocalist but he does have a very unique delivery and some very creative techniques. He is quite the performer too. I wouldn’t say it was boring per-se but it just sucked the life out of me and I got really tired. It was a real overload on the senses.
We had to leave after that because it was late, neither of us were too interested in the Bug and really nothing can go on after Sunn 0))).

Follow Up:
I found a live recording of this show on one of Sunn 0)))'s bandcamp pages and listening to it made me feel like the life was being sucked from me. It was an intense damn show. They played Toronto again this past March but I didn't want to take the night off work and I didn't want to put myself through that again.
I think Unsound/Luminato Festival is happening again this year but I couldn't give a fuck. I went for Sunn 0))), pure and simple.
This was one of the last things posted on the old Metal Set List board before it went down from June until October of last year. I like to think the shear heaviness of this show brought that bitch down .
