I've never really even heard of any of these bands but the show poster called me.
AHNA
Support: Abyss, Intensive Care, Demonic Possessor
Date: Friday June 16th, 2017
Venue: Coalition T.O. in Toronto, Ontario
T-shirt worn: Kenny Omega "G1/Final Fantasy VIII" (what a fucking mark)
The first band Demonic Possessor was added earlier on in the week when another band had to drop off the show. They played a good, heavy sludge. Their quite parts bored me but I'm finding quite parts always bore me in a live setting. But their heavy parts made up for it. They were really good.
FYI: shots of Wisers Deluxe are five dollars at Coalition T.O. It truly is the best dive club in Toronto.
The next band was another sludge band called Intensive Care, but they leaned more to the noise end of the genre. Their vocals left a little to be desired (I think less guttural, more shrill would have been better) but they made up for it with sheer volume and intensity. They made a lot of feedback and one tone actually almost made me collapse. So they were basically fucking amazing. But fifteen minutes was pretty much enough. Not because of any other reason than I didn't want to die today.
After that was a band called Abyss, who's name I've seen on a poster or two recently but I've never seen them. They looked like dorks so I was worried the night may have its first misstep. But they weren't bad at all. They were thrash but good thrash. Noisy, chaotic thrash like Noisem or Morbid Saint. Not that ass thrash like Overkiller or Anthraxs. *mic drop*
A band called Crux of Aux was supposed to play next but they had to drop off the show. I'm not even sure why. But I like saying their name. "Crux of Aux".
The last band was called AHNA. They came from Vancouver so I guess you could call them the “headliners”. They were the only band I'd listened to before the show and they sounded to me like Entombed but with shorter songs. That was basically what it came down to except their songs were all longer than the ones I'd heard. They were pretty good. The songs the guitar player sang were way better than the ones the drummer sang.
Overall it was a good show. After Intensive Care I was thinking it could have been in the running for SHOW OV DA YEAR ov da year but Abyss took me out of it a little. They were still fine but the show never reached quite the level that it hit with the first two bands. Thrash isn't really a style of music I'm too fond of. AHNA were good but my ears were pretty fried by that point. I should probably start wearing earplugs. But then I'd have to start carrying a purse to shows.
