Ring of Honor “Best in the World 2017”
June 23rd, 2017
From the Lowell Memorial Auditorium in Lowell, Massachusetts
Commentators: Ian Riccaboni and BJ Whitmer
The Kingdom vs. Ultimo Guerrero & el Terrible
Having Matt Taven and the Kingdom kick off a pay per view is not a good way to start a show off “hot”. But Ring of Honor seems hellbent on making him and this group seem like a big thing. Yet, they lost to a team that could likely never wrestle in Ring of Honor after this match. El Terrible and Ultimo Guerrero impressed me enough. Guerrero reminded me of that out of touch uncle at a wedding. But some of his moves were good, especially that headstand kick in the corner.
Winners: Ultimo Guerrero & el Terrible
Strap Match
Hangman Page vs. Frankie Kazarian
I had high hopes for this match after their unexpectedly rough match at War of the Worlds last month, which I felt got cut off way too early. They were able to continue the intensity from that match into this one. A Strap Match isn’t the best of hardcore stipulations but it’s a hardcore stipulation none-the-less. I still think they should go longer. I feel this isn’t the last we’ve seen of these two in the ring, especially since they’re tied 1-1 now. I’d like to see a Fight Without Honor at whatever the next pay per view is.
Winner: Frankie Kazarian
Losing Team Must Disband
The Rebellion vs. Search and Destroy
It was really hard to care about the stipulation in this match since one team (the Rebellion) is just a bunch of jobbers and the other is seemingly just thrown together from out of nowhere. It was a good enough match and as always Caprice Coleman was the star in my eyes. Even in loss I wouldn’t be surprised if the Rebellion stayed together in some capacity. I wouldn’t be surprised if Search and Destroy have gone their separate ways by the end of the year either, save Chris Sabin and Alex Shelley.
Winners: Search and Destroy
Silas Young w/the Beer City Bruiser vs. Jay Lethal
As expected this was a good match. And as expected Silas lost. I really thought he had it this time. But even in loss he came out looking really strong. He’s moving up in the company. He won’t be champion any time soon but he’ll be getting shots at non-pay per view events and maybe a television title by the end of the year.
Winner: Jay Lethal
For the Ring of Honor Six Man Tag Team Championships
Dalton Castle & the Boys vs. the Briscoes & Bully Ray (champions)
Since I don’t watch the weekly program I really was at a loss as to what Jay’s problem with the Boys was. This match was okay. It was essentially a three-on-one match since the Boys don’t do much other than get thrown around. The parts with Dalton and Bully Ray were pretty entertaining.
Winners: Dalton Castle & the Boys (new Ring of Honor Six Man Championships)
For the Ring of Honor Television Championship
Marty Scurll vs. Kushida (champion)
I still don’t see the big deal with Marty Scurll. I like his theme music but once he gets in the ring. Well I won’t sugar coat it. I fell asleep during this match. And I’m not saying that to be a smark; I literally fell asleep and when I woke up they were showing highlights of the Women of Honor match that was on during the pre-show. So I missed STARDOM HIGH SPEED CHAMPION KRIS WOLF tonight too. I don't know who she is but I did watch a couple YouTube videos and she annoyed me.
Winner: Kushida
For the Ring of Honor Tag Team Championships
War Machine vs. the Young Bucks (champions) vs. the Best Friends
The show needed this match. It needed it a lot earlier actually. But it woke me back up. It was good enough. I’ve seen better but it didn’t put me to sleep. I kinda wanted to see the Buck lose this one and I felt War Machine deserved the titles again but whatever.
Winners: the Young Bucks
For the Ring of Honor Word Heavyweight Championship
Cody vs. Christopher Daniels (champion)
I’m all for Christopher Daniels’ “thank you” run with the belt but every reaction I’ve seen the guy get as champion is the proverbial “Conway pop”. The title needed to come off him. It was getting embarrassing. Tonight was the night it needed to happen. Cody is hotter than he’ll ever be. This was a good match but this pay per view really hadn’t been very good in my eyes so much like Daniels reign I was ready to put a bullet in it and move on.
Winner: Cody (new Ring of Honor World Heavyweight Champion)
__________________________________________________________________
Yeah, for whatever reason I was not feeling the pay per view tonight. There was just never that spark of “ohhh” and “awww”. Even the best matches were just “the best matches on this show”. There was nothing I really want to ever see again. Nothing I’d put on my Matches of the Year list. Oh well. You win some and you lose some. At least Cody wasn’t laying down for Cheeseburger two months ago.
I don’t see Dalton and the Boys holding the six man titles very long. For one, two of them don’t wrestle so it’s just stupid for them to have them. Secondly, the Briscoes and Bully Ray were booked to defend them against the Bullet Club (the Young Bucks and Hangman Page) at the TV tapings tomorrow night and why not milk what’s left out of that faction and give them (the Bullet Club) all the titles? I figured it was going to happen even when the Briscoes and Bully had the titles.
The commentary team of Ian Riccaboni and BJ Whitmer was pretty bad. They really need to get Kevin Kelly on all their pay per views. I think their voices are what took me out of this show from the get-go.
