Thantifaxath
Support: Sortilegia, Dire Omen
Date: Saturday July 2nd, 2016
Venue: the Coalition Lounge in Toronto, Ontario
T-shirt worn: Today is the Day “In the Eyes of God”
I got to the venue about fifteen minute after doors. I don’t know why I rushed thought. I really like the Coalition Lounge but shows I see there always run late. Thankfully Dire Omen was fucking incredible. They reminded me of Abyssal or Impetuous Ritual. Since I’ll likely never see either of those bands live this is the closest I’ll ever get so I was happy. Their singer/guitarist was a FUCKING BEAST. Wicked voice for death metal and technically incredible too. The only thing they needed to work on is a guitar tone with more low-end but I really liked this band and I’d LOVE to see them again.
It took Sortilegia almost an hour to set up and that pissed me off quite a bit. But once they got going they were really cool too. They were the polar opposite of Dire Omen from a technical standpoint but had the dank atmosphere down to a “T”. I really liked these guys too. Their vocals were a little low in the mix, which was both cool and too bad. I like vocals that are low in the mix a lot of the times but I think they needed to be a bit higher to suit their sound.
Thantifaxath thankfully got on stage really quickly. I’ve heard of them before and know one song title (Gasping in Darkness) but I have no idea what they played. They were really sonically abrasive. They sounded like Portal in space. They had a really Voivod feeling with a lot of their guitar work. So they’re like Portal meets Voivod. Really cool but I think more guttural vocals would have suited them better.
Overall, probably the dankest show I’ll see all year. I’m glad I went and I had fun.

Follow-up:
This was definitely one of the danker shows I went to in 2016 but maybe not the dankest. I don't remember.
Thantifaxath and Dire Omen were both great but I haven't listened to either since.
I saw Sortilegia about nine months later and they were much, much better. Not that they were bad this night but they were better then.
