Primus was one of my favorite bands in high school but in the years since I haven't really listened to them. Antipop did me in; Animals Should Not Try To Act Like People briefly brought me back but in the years since I've forgotten about them. I saw them three times back in high school but the last time was in 1999. But since I'm homo alone for the next two weeks I needed something to do so I bought a ticket last minute for the first of their two shows in Toronto this weekend.
I got to the club WAY TOO EARLY. Like, two hours before doors. So I drank a lot of coffee and ate one of the worst hamburgers I’ve had in my life because every fucking restaurant in the area of the venue is fucking Greek…since it’s in Greektown. Then I had to line up to get in. I haven’t done that in years but at least it was a nice night.
There were no openers, which suited me fine. Primus came on at around quarter past eight and played for almost two and a half hours. They sounded pretty good. It was nice to hear a lot of songs from my youth. And now I can say I finally heard Wynonna’s Big Brown Beaver live. Toys Go Winding Down was especially awesome. But then there was a half-hour break in the middle that just killed me. It was because they were setting up for the Chocolate Factory portion of the show. But I think they should have just had it set-up to begin with and maybe played that portion of the set first. Because it honestly sucked. I didn’t even know they had a new album and I really only like the first and last song of that part of the set (Hello Wonkites and Goodbye Wonkites) and the song Cheer Up Charlie. The rest was fucking boring. I hate Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The whole thing is long played out for me. The videos were trippy but whatever. At least the videos followed the movie so I could tell how far along they were by what part of the movie it was. The crowd was in to it but I think everyone was more than happy when they busted into some older stuff again. I was a little pissed at the end after Southbound Pachyderm when Les said they were going to play some songs for us…then they played one more song and the show was over. They’re playing the same place tomorrow night so I guess the intent is that a lot of people are going to that too. Not me though. If it was thirty bucks a show I would but just this one was almost sixty and I can’t do that.
So I was glad I went. It was great to hear any of the pre-2000 stuff and nothing from Antipop was welcomed but I didn’t really like any of the new stuff at all. A two and a half hour set from Primus should be awesome but they ate up forty-five minutes with the Chocolate Factory album when they have some much better stuff to pick from. I could go on about “no this” or “no that” but they’re in town tomorrow too so I’m sure they’ll play John the Fisherman or Tommy the Cat then. I’ll see them again but I’ll make sure to find out if they’re touring for a concept album beforehand.
Les wasn’t his “normal” jovial self either. He seemed distracted and disconnected.

So here's the set from night two, courtesy of setlist.fm. There's some good songs in there for sure. A lot I'd have rather heard than the Chocolate Factory album set. But most importantly they DID NOT play Over the Electric Grapevine, which was the one song that had me wanting to go again tonight. Tickets were unavailable so I couldn't. But now I don't care.

Yeah, it was good to catch up with Primus but I really haven't thought about them since. I'm long since "over" them. I guess I grew out of their music. I'd see them again though. But as I said two years ago: I'll make sure they're not touring for a concept album. I'll stick with a new album tour or (even better) a greatest hits nostalgia tour.
