This was some indie, hipster festival that hasn’t been around for very long and probably won’t be around for much longer. I really only heard about it last weekend and figured it’d be worth going to because I really like Grimes. Death Grips were supposed to have played but they broke up last week. The only other band I’d ever even heard of was Haerts but they were playing much earlier in the day than when I was going to get there. I haven’t been to an outdoor show in years. So it figured that the sky opened up as soon as I left my house. Thankfully I always keep an umbrella in my car. At least it wasn’t cold outside but standing in a damp sweater for four hours pretty much guarantees me feeling like shit tomorrow.
I got there as St. Lucia was just starting up. They played a pretty nice version of inoffensive indie-synth-pop. I liked them better when their singer wasn’t singing. After only about five minute Action Bronson came on and he was fucking terrible. It may have been his shtick or it may have been because he was really high. But it was just a mess of songs starting and stopping after only a minute or two, starting songs over, bad covers of already bad eighty’s songs. Just brutal. The sound was terrible too. The music was way in the background. It honestly sounded like a soundcheck. It was pretty cool when someone handed him a sandwich halfway through the set and he stopped to eat it. I think it was his shtick but he was a train-wreck and it couldn’t have ended early enough for me. Flume was much better. I don’t usually like indie-electronica but the sound was much better so his bass-drops sounded great. I have no idea about any of his music but he could’ve played for another hour and I wouldn’t have complained.
Flume finished up twenty minutes earlier then expected then Grimes came out fifteen minutes later than posted. So there was nearly an hour wait. And since there was an eleven o’clock curfew she only played for about fifty minutes. And that really sucked because she was really good. The live footage of her I’ve seen has been good but in-between songs wasn’t. Between every song it sounded like she was doing a soundcheck, just very un-professional. But she’s gotten it together and the flow of the show was great. The new songs were okay but she’s going in a totally different direction with her new stuff. It sounds like top-40 radio music. I have nothing against that but it could blow up in her face. She’s still not a top-40 personality. So unless she changes her entire image it could ruin her. The older songs were all great. My highlight was Nightmusic. That song ROCKS! And Go is an incredible song too, just again; not what I expected from Grimes. I really enjoyed her performance though. It just really sucked that it ended so early. I could’ve watched her for another hour. I’ll definitely see her again. But again; it depends on this new direction she’s taking.
Grimes
1. Symphonia IX (My Wait Is U)
2. Circumambient
3. ? (may have just been an interlude)
4. Oblivion
5. New song
6. Be A Body
7. Nightmusic
8. New song
9. Phone Sex (Blood Diamonds cover)
10. Go
11. Genesis

The TIME Festival did end up happening again in 2015 but I didn't go. I don't know if it happened again in 2016 or if it's happening again this year. I don't really care. I found out about it a week or two before it happened this year I went and I only found it because I was looking for Grimes shows.
Grimes did put an album out the following year called Art Angels. I didn't like it at all and I've sort of given up on her. I don't think her image has been ruined just yet. People seem to still love her. I don't get it. I think she played Toronto again in 2015 or 2016 at a decent sized venue but I couldn't make it. She was good at this show though.
I bought Flumes album shortly after this show and he was way better live. The album was okay but he extended the songs a lot live. It's like Mobys 'Play' for millenials
I don't mind Action Bronson now. I just don't think this was the type of show to see him at.
