When it comes to early PWG DVD's it is VERY hit or miss. The commentary is usually cringe worthy, to put it lightly, and the production makes me miss early ROH production (actually.... it's probably about the same, if not even slightly better). I have practically given up on early PWG shows just based off of their commentary. It is recorded after the show in some guys apartment (that's how it sounds at least) and who ever does commentary usually sounds like they are trying to talk really quiet because their parents are asleep in the next room over.
Luckily PWG DVD's allow you to turn off the commentary and just enjoy the in ring product. So I started out with the commentary turned off, but turned it on at one point and the guy was talking about noodles or spaghetti or something. Turned it off, then back on and they had some Asian girls speaking Japanese (?) and everyone was laughing.... are they really that bored calling these matches?
Anyway, I found four mid-2000's PWG DVD's for only $2 each on eBay and really couldn't pass it up, and it really wasn't a bad show!
Singles Match
Chris Hero vs. Claudio Castagnoli
- This was an insane opener! Really good match with some incredible reversals and chain wrestling spots, especially for it only being 2006. A ton of stiff shots and incredible work from both guys. The ending stretch was so fucking good! It's no wonder they were known as "The King's of Wrestling". I believe they have a match on one of the other DVDs I got too from 2007, so I can't wait to see more of their early work. This match went about 24 minutes, and worth every second.
Singles Match
Alex Koslov vs. TJ Perkins
- Alex Koslov has really grown as one of my favorites, especially his early work, and it's always a treat to see TJ Perkins in his early days. This was the shortest match of the disc, at about 13 minutes, and it flew right by. Just a really good technical wrestling match.
Six Man Tag Team Match
Disco Machine, Nemesis & Ronin vs. Los Luchas (Phoenix Star & Zokre) & Top Gun Talwar
- All six guys here just reeked of "Early PWG". They aren't bad, but the company itself just didn't have it's star power that it has nowadays. Disco Machine, despite his really dumb name, is a surprisingly good in ring worker, as is Nemesis. Los Luchas were pretty fun too. There wasn't really anything that stood out here. Just a match.
PWG Title Match (Special Enforcer: Scorpio Sky)
Joey Ryan (c) vs. Human Tornado (w/Jade Chung)
- It's weird seeing Joey Ryan before every match involved him trying to get his opponent to touch his dick. He was a good worker, but I really do prefer the 100% comedy Joey we have nowadays (funny since I hate guys like Toru Yano). This match was ok. I really need to see Human Tornado more because he is fun to watch, but his physical build just lacks what you think a wrestler should look like. So yeah, match happened.
PWG Title #1 Contendership Match
Chris Bosh vs. Scott Lost
- I have seen some reviews of this with people saying "Meh... it was just ok"... but I loved this match. I am not 100% sure if both guys were a team at this moment, I am pretty sure they were, but they had some really good in ring chemistry and put on a fun match. I really would not mind seeing more of these two. They are on some of my other PWG DVD's I have, but they haven't stood out a whole lot since they look pretty "basic", but definitely deliver! At one point Scott Lost (I think it was) said something along the lines of "Shut up fa**ot!" to the crowd.... yeaaaaah, that wouldn't go over very well these days... yikes.
Best Two Out Of Three Falls Match
B-Boy vs. Chris Sabin
- Solid match, but felt like it was really dragging near the end. Chris Sabin was one of my favorites back around this time after seeing him in TNA, and B-Boy can be a hit or miss performer back in his early career. I have seen him a few times over the last year in person and he has come so far, even putting on a possible MOTYC against a local guy here named Daniel Makabe. So this match had some really nasty spots and some great in ring work, but as I said, really dragged out in the end.
PWG Tag Team Title Match
Davey Richards & Super Dragon (c) vs. Cape Fear (El Generico & Quicksilver)
- I can go both ways with this. First off, lets get this out of the way.... the match went nearly 40 minutes which I felt, given the structure of this match, was WAY TOO DAMN LONG. It just felt like every time Quicksilver was in the ring the match slowed to a halt since it mainly consisted of him getting beat up or locked in submissions (imagine that for a majority of the match). But every time El Generico got in the ring it was entertaining and good... he even hit his top rope brain buster on goddamn Super Dragon! I wouldn't recommend this match for anyone unfamiliar with early PWG, but if they are then definitely check it out because it was at least good storytelling and drama.
So overall, the DVD was ok. Comparing it to other earlier PWG discs, I'd say this was one of the better ones. Hero vs Claudio was a damn fine match that made the $2 I spent on this disc well worth it, and the surprisingly good match between Bosh and Lost was also a highlight. I wouldn't necessarily recommend this for anyone looking to get into PWG, but it's a cool way to time travel and see all of these guys and where they got their start, especially since a small handful are now members of the WWE Universe, or have gone on to much bigger and better things.
