Ring of Honor “Night of Appreciation”
April 27th, 2002
From the Murphy Recreational Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Commentators: Donnie B and Steve Corino
Some guys meet up in the arena. They're glad to be teaming again tonight in Ring of Honor. As they make their way backstage they push some ring crew around.
Tonight is a night of appreciation towards Eddy Guerrero.
Divine Storm and Jason XL are backstage warming up. Quite Storm wants to put Jason XL in a new submission move but Jason won't let him since he's a high flyer and doesn't do that kind of wrestling.
Christopher Street Connection welcomes the crowd waiting outside to the show. They act in their flamboyant fashion until da Hit Squad come out and chase them off. Then they welcome the crowd to the show. This was okay at the last show but I didn't need to see it again. It only went on for a minute of two this time.
American Dragon is backstage warming up when Quite Storm comes in asking him to show his partner a new submission.
Jason XL is still arguing with Chris Divine about not being a submission wrester when Quite Storm comes in with American Dragon. American Dragon and slaps Jason in a submission.
Homicides crew are backstage when one of those guys from the first segment comes in and asks Boogaloo if he's ready. They don't even know what he's talking about.
Frank Talent of the PA State Athletic Commission gives the wrestlers a pep talk before the show. He tells them all to give one hundred and ten percent tonight for Eddy Guerrero, since it's his last show for Ring of Honor. Spanky is disrespectful towards everything he says.
After almost twelve minutes we're finally in the ring.
Da Hit Squad come out and calls the Christopher Street Connection out. They do come out and da Hit Squad starts beating on them. Then Allison Danger comes out and announces this is a three-way match and will include Prince Nana and Elax.
Da Hit Squad vs. Christopher Street Connection w/Allison Danger vs. Prince Nana & Elax w/Simply Luscious (who also wrestled when Prince Nana decided Elax sucked)
This wasn't much of a match. What little there was was nice and rough but it barely lasted five minutes. I'd like to see da Hit Squad in a fifteen-minute match against decent teams, although all their opponents tonight could at least take hits.
Winners: da Hit Squad
Recap of Jay Briscoes losing streak in Ring of Honor. Tonight he hopes to break that streak against Tony Mamaluke. His brother Mark Briscoe doesn't have faith in him.
Jay Briscoe w/Mark Briscoe vs. Tony Mamaluke
This was a really good match but it was way too short. I don't know if it even hit eight minutes.
Winner: Jay Briscoe
As the Briscoes make their ways backstage Mama and MOTHER FUCKING PAPA BRISCOE congratulate Jay on his win. But Mark still isn't impressed since he thinks Jay almost lost.
James Maritato stops Tony Mamaluke when he gets backstage and tells him to drop the comedy F.B.I gimmick.
Joey Matthews and Christian York are ready for Divine Storm tonight.
Divine Storm w/Jason XL vs. Joey Matthews & Christian York
This wasn't a bad match. There was a bit of arguing between Divine Storm and Jason XL because he interfered in the match and you weren't supposed to do that in Ring of Honor back then.
Winners: Divine Storm
Recap of Xavier's matches the last few months against Scoot Andrews and James Maritato.
James Maritato is ready for his three-way match against Xavier and Scoot Andrews.
Scoot Andrews cuts a promo for the three-way match, which he really should have practiced in the mirror a few times.
Scoot Andrews vs. James Maritato vs. Xavier
Fucking Philadelphia and their THREE-WAY DANCES. This wasn't very good. It was very sloppy and uncoordinated. And short.
Winner: James Maritato
Simply Luscious' breasts angrily tell some official she didn't want to drive thirty-two hours to the show tonight to team with a loser like Prince Nana. He promises her breasts something better next month.
AJ Styles is ready to battle Low Ki in his Ring of Honor debut tonight.
AJ Styles vs. Low Ki
This was a great fucking match! They stiffed the fucking shit out of one another. But the ending was fucking bullshit. I don't think it was a three count. That ending took me out of it and rather than remembering it as such an awesome match I kind of forgot about it.
Winner: Low Ki
Christopher Daniels is glad Ring of Honor brought Donovan Morgan in tonight to wrestle him; a man he feels is up to his standards.
Marcos & Dunn vs. Carnage Crew
This was a squash. But it wasn't fun to watch. I don't think Marcos or Dunn were even trained wrestlers and I'm surprised the one in blue didn't die.
Winners: Carnage Crew
Donovan Morgan tells Ring of Honor to get ready.
Donovan Morgan vs. Christopher Daniels
I find when the commentators spend most of the match hard-selling how great the combatants are they're usually covering up for something boring and unmemorable; like this match. This was good but there have already been better matches on this card.
Winner: Donovan Morgan
After the match Christopher Daniels grabs a mic and calls the Code of Honor a farce. Then he warns Donovan Morgan about the punks in the lockeroom and tells him he's got his back.
Rudy Boy Gonzalez preps his trainees for their upcoming Gauntlet match. Spanky is a disrespectful little prick.
Simple Luscious joins the commentary team.
Texas Academy Gauntlet Match
Paul London vs. John Hope
They only showed five seconds worth of highlights from this match. How bad could it have been that Marcos and Dunn verses the Carnage Crew was left on the video and this match was cut?
Winner: Paul London
Paul London vs. Michael Shane
This wasn't too bad. It was very short but I expect that in Gauntlet Matches.
Winner: Michael Shane
Michael Shane vs. Spanky
There were some nice slaps at the beginning of this match. And Steve Corino turned into “prick Steve Corino” and cause Simply Luscious to leave commentary. This was a good match that could've held its own and not part of a Gauntlet Match. Michael Shane passed out from blood loss at one point and it was fucking funny. Spanky lost five times as much the previous month and kept going. I’ve seen guys bleed like pigs and keep going. Michael Shane had been busted open eight or nine minutes earlier and there wasn’t really even any blood on him. It made him look like a complete putz. Especially in Philadelphia. I hear wrestling could get pretty brutal there sometimes so I’m surprised the crowd didn’t let him have it.
Winner: Spanky
Spanky vs. American Dragon
Speaking of being better than a Gauntlet Match against other trainees...really? American Dragon was in this after destroying in the main event of the last show? This was another good match that could've held on its own. Spanky got the crap kicked out of him and was sloppy at times, but he took a helluva beating.
Winner: Spanky
Spanky gets a microphone and says this was the first step in his quest for the non-existent Ring of Honor championship. American Dragon starts cutting a promo and enters himself in the running for the non-existent Ring of Honor championship. Christopher Daniels comes out enters himself in the tournament. Scoot Andrews comes out and does the same. Then Xavier, Jay Briscoe, Prince Nana and Low Ki enter themselves. I wish the ring mic audio wasn't so bad because I'd have liked to have heard what they all said.
Oh, by the way during the last match (before all those guys started coming out) a tournament was announced to crown the first Ring of Honor champion. It would conclude with a sixty minute four man Iron Man Match in July of that year.
Recap of recent strife between Amazing Red and his partners in SAT. Their trainer Mickey Whipwreck chose Eddy Guerrero to be Amazing Reds partner this night.
SAT vs. Amazing Red & Eddy Guerrero
Eddy had actually returned to the WWE at this point in time and was Intercontinental Champion but I guess this was an Indy date he had to honor. This was anything special.
Winners: Amazing Red & Eddy Guerrero
After match Jason XL gets in the ring and demands respect... I think. I can barely hear a word. Eddy grabs the microphone and calls him “Little Bow Wow”, which leads to an impromptu match.
Jason XL vs. Eddy Guerrero
This last less than a minute.
Winner: Eddy Guerrero
Afterwards Eddie breaks character and speaks of his demons and how he's found God. He recently had lost his family but he says he has another family: the wrestlers backstage and fans. He thanks Philadelphia for always being a home to him.
Low Ki and American Dragon are backstage talking about how great it was to see everyone paying respect to Eddie Guerrero during the last match (which they were but I didn’t mention it). Then the notice Spanky talking to pizza in the lockeroom and they realize he wasn't out there with everyone. They argue then Christopher Daniels and Donovan Morgan join in and they all fight.
_____________________________________________________________
This actually wasn’t a very bad show at all. I almost didn’t watch it after not being blown away by the previous months show. I was thinking I should skip ahead to the prime meat of 2005 but I stuck to my guns with watching everything in sequence and I’m glad I did. The promos and skits in the first half really killed me, especially the twelve minutes right at the beginning, but that tapered off in the second half. I do have one problem that a few matches were way too short. Jay Briscoe verses Tony Mamaluke could’ve had all the time from both the Three-Way Dance and Marcos and Dunn verses the Carnage Crew. And the ending to the AJ Styles verses Low Ki match just really pissed me off.
There were quite a few ECW alumni crew tonight and at the last show. John Finnegan was reffing and I think one of the other refs was from ECW too. And that blond security guy with the mullet was there.
There were a lot of comments aimed towards the Christopher Street Connection would not fly in 2017. Wow.
I never found out who those two guys right at the beginning of the show were. Maybe I missed something? But whoever they were they were annoying as fuck so unless they got their asses kicked I’m glad I didn’t have to see them.
