The first band of the night was called Sovereign and they weren't that bad. They were a post-black metal band that reminded me of Woods of Ypres but with way longer songs and a heavier emphasis on the mellow "post" parts. They got a little boring but when they amped it up and were doing blast beats and screaming they were good.
The next band Uhtcearu was way better. They were just a thrashy blackened death metal band and usually that music bores me a bit but something about this band was striking me quite well. I think it was the fan that they had set up was blowing the guitarists hair quite comically. Like, very funny. And the fact that I’d had a fair amount to drink in a short time. I liked them enough to buy a CD. They're the only band who I bothered with any song titles tonight. I know they opened with a song called A Shelter for Forgotten Souls and played a few off their new album, one called Tower of Silence.
The following band Unbowed got the crowd moving quite a bit more (a one man moshpit) but I didn't really like them. Their songs were way too long and everything sounded the same to me. The show was running really far behind schedule too so I didn’t really want seven minute songs right then. Their makeup was cool and their drummer was funny to watch. Some of his facial expressions made him look like the ERMAHGERD meme girl.
Vow of Thorns weren't bad at all. They reminded me of Alcest but more "rock" and with way longer songs. Their post-sections were a little boring at first but their loud sections were really good, and then I found myself enjoying their post sections too. I really enjoyed them too and I bought their album afterwards.
Then there was Sex Master…
Things were running really late and they went on almost an hour after what was posted on Facebook at 1:30am. I asked Nathan if he wanted to stay for them because he had to get up at eight in the morning but he was pretty drunk and I don’t think he knew what was going on. And I was glad because I really didn’t want to miss a band called “Sex Master”. They set up in the middle of the floor of the club so right then I knew things were going to be different. They looked like sleaze punk guys but they ended up being very primal, very repetitive and very basic death metal. I think they may have been a joke band and possibly making up their set as they went along. But they changed the entire show. It had been an okay show but I was kinda pissed that I likely wouldn’t be getting home until 3:30 in the morning. But Sex Master was so goofy, random and fun that I all of a sudden didn’t care. They played for maybe fifteen minutes and it was the most fun I’ve had watching a band in a long time. I do wish tings had have gotten even crazier because I think it had the potential to get there; some drunk kid falling into the drums or maybe someone punching me in the face. Even Nathan, who’s so phlegmatic that he makes me look like the wildest person in the room, was raising the fist chanting “SEX-MAS-TER” with the thirty or forty other people there. They were a lot of fun to watch and they changed a show that could have been “just another show” into a really fun night.
