Deftones
Support: Refused
Date: Saturday August 13th, 2016
Venue: the International Center in Toronto, Ontario
I was excited enough for this show by my interest waned over the last couple of weeks. Deftones are one of my...top fifty bands maybe? I saw them almost twenty years ago opening for Black Sabbath and Pantera and that was it. They play here, like, every year but I just never bothered going. I guess this being on a Saturday and my recent concert binging did it. I think I bought the ticket before their newest album had even came out .
It was raining pretty hard when I got to the venue and there was quite a line even an hour after doors had opened. So I sat in my car and waited. I thought there was another support band playing first but what-ev-ah. And I really didn't care to see Refused again. I saw them almost a year to the day last summer opening for Faith No More and I didn't really like them. Sadly, even when the rain let up I really wasn't in a rush to go in and see them. Then once I did finally make my way in Refused were half way into their set and found a nice wall to sit against and plot my masterpiece. I've tried many times before but I can't really get into them save that one song New Noise. It sounded to me like they played different songs from last summer but I didn't know any save the closer New Noise.
The Deftones newest album Gore is pretty bad but I still wanted to see them on the strength of their back catalogue and since I've come to find the Gore songs are better taken in small doses and spread apart, like they would be at a live show. It was hard for me to get into this show thought. My head was elsewhere tonight. I'm having gas buildups in my stomach and I can't burp, therefor I am dying. But there were some positives. For one I didn’t feel nostalgic hearing a lot of these songs I’ve known for quite some time. Deftones may have been around for over twenty years now and were lumped in with nu-metal but I’d say they’re just as fresh, vibrant and relevant as they’ve ever been. They sounded really good for the most part. Diamond Eyes was a little rough and the last bit of the set I’ll get to in a minute. After wondering for almost twenty years I was finally able to see what Frank Delgado really does in the band. And Chino Moreno is an excellent singer and sounded just as good as he does on album. Unless he was singing to a backtrack, that would make him a poser. The songs that he played on guitar (Rosemary, Digital Bath, Tempest, Swerve City, Beauty School and Change (in the House of Flies)) were far and away the best songs they played. It would have been much better to get him to play on a few others like Be Quite and Drive (Far Away). So…he’s really the star of the band. The more aggressive songs really didn’t work for me. I don’t know if they work for the band either. They seemed more comfortable playing the slower, shoegaze songs. But, they have to play the faster songs…I guess. The last five songs were actually kind of terrible. I didn’t recognize Passenger because I hated that song from the day the album was released and never listen to it. It sounded like a fucking mess to me. Then during Rickets and Headup it was like watching Fred Durst out there trying to be cool. I made for the door during Bored because then it turned too much into a late-1990’s sad, nostalgia show for me. But they were still decent enough.

I was a little pissed when looking at past dates on this tour on setlists.fm and seeing that other cities got Minerva, MX, What Happened to You? and L(MIRL)…all songs I’d have rather seen then some tonight. I guess we’re the only city to get You’ve Seen the Butcher but Minerva and MX are two of my favourite Deftones songs ☹

So...uhh...yeah!...the Deftones. II barely remember this show. I remember sitting in the parking lot listening to the Swans album Love of Life better.
My stomach pain eventually went away though.
