I got to the venue way too early (again) which goes against everything I stand for. But last time I went to one of these shows I ended up really liking three of the four bands so I didn’t want to miss any, especially since I knew some would be playing for fifteen minutes. So I got to sit there and drink warm beer with ten other people (most of which were band members girlfriends) as TotalXWar did their soundcheck. That was fun.
Not.
But I actually like this Coalition Lounge place since they have couches. No trashcans though, lame .
TotalXWar finally started things after about an hour. They were okay. It was their first show. They had a bit or a harder old-school sound. They had some nice breakdowns and riffs and (I can't believe I'm going to lower myself to saying this) really good drumming. If anything their singer was their weak point but he said he was sick or something. They played for about seventeen minutes and got some air-punching during the last minute.
The place actually cleared out quite a bit before Mad Trapper and I couldn't blame anyone. They weren't very good at all. I guess they were like Converge? Maybe like Converge in their earlier days? I've never heard early Converge so I really have no idea what I'm talking about and I only made the comparison because their singer was wearing a Converge shirt. I liked the intros to their songs and the chaos in between songs but their actual songs bored me. They were too long. If they kept them to under forty-five seconds that would have been way better. But the most entertaining thing about their set was the singer and bass players antics. And when some guys glasses got elbowed off during the breakdown at the end of their set. But yeah, I wasn't impressed.
Homewrecker is what brought me out to this show. I saw them in April and even though they weren't the best band that night that was a REALLY GOOD show so they still rocked pretty hard. I don't know what I saw that night that was missing tonight. They were a lot slower and sludgier than I remembered and had a lot of long, drawn out sections with no vocals. Normally that wouldn’t bother me but I wanted chaos tonight. The crowd was really tame tonight too and kept getting thinner and thinner as the show went on. I know they played at least two (possibly three) songs from when I saw them the last time but it just wasn't working tonight. Well, I know what happened actually. Last time the band before them (Discourse) was really good and the band coming up after them was Harm's Way. So I guess I liked them because of the company they were keeping? “Awesome by association”? I don't know. I just know I was really disappointed. They were good but I had my hopes up too high.
I truly felt like leaving by that point. I'm not a fan of Noisem and it only cost ten dollars to get in. But, I figured Noisem might play for a half an hour tops and make it worth my while. And I was surprised; they were not bad at all. They played to probably the smallest crowd of the night but they were by far the best band. I'm not a fan of the thrash metal really but I wouldn't even call them one hundred percent thrash. Maybe...extremely aggressive thrashcore? They played for about twenty-five minutes and it was all speed. Well there was one section towards the end when they slowed down and that kind of sucked but overall they were very good. The singer mentioned a few song titles but they had screaming feedback between songs (which added to my enjoyment) and I didn't catch any. I think they played maybe eight or ten songs.
Those kids need to bathe though.

Looking back; even though I was quite kind to Noisem in that review I really could've been more glowing in my review. They were really fucking good. I've since bought both of their albums and they're really good too. They're a great band that I hope to see again.
I haven't seen Homewrecker since but they still play alot in the North-Eastern states. They may have been to Toronto since this show but I missed them.
I ended up seeing Mad Trapper again a few months later. I think they were opening for Madball?
I haven't seen or heard from TotalXWar since.
