I am starting to sound like a repeating record, but early PWG can be hit or miss. Whether it's just bland in ring work, mediocre talent on the shows, or the godawful post-production 3am apartment commentary, a lot of times it's just very difficult to get through. Not all of them are bad, or bad at all, just difficult to really get through. With all of that, I wasn't sure what to expect from this show... but it wasn't bad at all... it also wasn't good, or very memorable, just there... but it wasn't bad!
Clocking it at just under an hour and fifty minutes, this show is an easy watch. None of the matches are bad, per-se, but none of them are really amazing, just there on a nice "auto-pilot" feeling event. What helped this out a lot though is the fact that the commentary was done LIVE at the venue (which took place at their now home venue in Reseda) by Excalibur and some other guy who's name I can't recall, but he was pretty good.
This was also a "one night" tournament for the vacant PWG Title that Low Ki held, but if memory serves me right, he couldn't make it to PWG due to contract negotiations and had to mail the PWG Title back to them from Japan, thus causing the tournament.
Here's a quick rundown of the matches...
DDT4 Qualifying Round Robin Series Match
Ronin & Scorpio Sky vs. The Young Bucks (Matt Jackson & Nick Jackson)
- This was an ok match. The Young Bucks didn't move as fast or "fluid like" in this. They still hit their spots, but weren't as "spot monkey" as they are now. They were also still fairly new to PWG, having only wrestled there for roughly a year by this time. So yeah, solid match, Ronin is still fat, but Scorpio Sky looked really good. Bucks of Youth won and the commentators were surprised.
PWG World Title Tournament First Round Match
Frankie Kazarian vs. Karl Anderson
- Just another ok match. Karl Anderson was fun, and by the sounds of it Kazarian was getting signed to TNA and wouldn't be able to show up anymore. Karl won with a cheap roll up.
DDT4 Qualifying Round Robin Series Match
Los Luchas (Phoenix Star & Zokre) vs. Hook Bomberry & TJ Perkins
- Overly forgettable match. Bomberry and TJP weren't working well together, but Los Luchas were a damn good team. I hope they're on the next (and last, for now) DVD that I have of old PWG!
Singles Match
Candice LaRae vs. Daffney
- Decent enough match. Weird seeing Daffney not look the way she looked in WCW. I dunno, that's about it, Candice won.
PWG World Title Tournament First Round Match
Human Tornado vs. Necro Butcher
- Probably my match of the night. This was just a fun brawl between the two around the building, which is weird because I just don't see Tornado as a hardcore guy. At one moment they went over to the bar and did a shot together, then got back in the ring for more brawling. Match ended with some nasty chair shots and slams.... and Tornado surprisingly picked up the win over Necro!!!
PWG World Tag Team Title Match
The Dynasty (Joey Ryan & Scott Lost) (w/Jade Chung) (c) vs. Incoherence (Delirious & Hallowicked)
- One thing I've noticed on some of these older PWG shows... the Tag Title matches go on FOREVER. I get it, they want everyone to get their shit in, but goddamn they just go and go and go. It wasn't a bad match, it was pretty fun, but just felt way too long. Incoherence was a fun team, and The Dynasty won.
PWG World Title Tournament Final Three Way Match
Human Tornado vs. Karl Anderson vs. Roderick Strong
- The match was pretty good, but didn't "stand out" as the whole show just felt like it was on auto-pilot... which isn't a bad thing really. Human Tornado ended up getting the win and becoming the new PWG Champion.
So yeah, overall just a show that was there. It felt like it was on auto-pilot, which made it an easy watch, but also made everything kinda just blend together/nothing stood out as a phenomenal match. If you can get it for cheap, go for it, it's a fine show, just don't expect anything groundbreaking.
