Rotting Christ
Support: Carach Angren, Necronomicon
Date: Friday September 9th, 2016
Venue: the Opera House in Toronto, Ontario
T-shirt worn: Revenge 'Behold.Total.Rejection.'
So this show was supposed to be headlined by Swedish black metal band Marduk but VISA issues prevented them from entering North America and as of this show they'd already missed the first week of the three-week North American tour. But the support acts all decided to solider on. Rotting Christ are from Greece and Carach Angren the Netherlands, so since Marduk had to cancel late last week they’d probably already made the arrangements and it was too late to look back. I already thought it was quite ambitious of the promoter to book this show at the Opera House since the last time Marduk played here in 2011 they played somewhere way smaller and they haven't really done anything since then that sound have increased their popularity. When they had to cancel and it was announced that Rotting Christ would be headlining I was really surprised that the show didn't get moved. But I guess it was such short notice the promoter decided to take a massive hit and keep it at a larger venue. He actually put a poll up on his Facebook page two days ago asking if anyone even wanted to see this show.
I got in about ten minutes before Necronomicon started up and was surprised that there was actually a decent amount of people there already. They were fine. Just typical symphonic death metal that I've heard a million times before so it really just bounced off me. Their singer/guitarist was playing a Dean guitar, so they get an extra Pantera-point.
Necronomicon
1. Advent of the Human God (The Heart of Darkness)
2. I Bringer of Light
3. Crown of thorns
4. Rise of the Elder Ones
5. Into the Fire
6. The Time is Now
I have no idea who Carach Angren are but judging by the crowd they're very popular in the Lesbian Black Metal circle. To me they sounded almost exactly like the last band just more theatrical. Pretty much Cradle of Filth. Who knows if in twenty years we’ll be criticizing them for being stagnant for the last ten years? They didn't have a bass player. I don't know if that's normal for them. I didn't really care for them at all except one short song in the middle where the singer put on a mask and sort of rapped.
Carach Angren
1. ?
2. ?
3. Sir John
4. When Crows Tick on Windows
5. The Wheel Wheel Murder
6. ?
7. ?
8. Killed and Served by the Devil
9. Bloodstains of the Captain’s Log
*I found out when I got home and researched who the heck these guys are that Jack Owen of Cannibal Corpse and Deicide was playing guitar for them.*
Had Marduk cancelled any other show I probably wouldn't have came out tonight and just taken the refund. But Rotting Christ was the reason I wanted to come out in the first place. I wouldn't call them a "bucket list" band but I've wanted to see them for close to ten years. I've even had tickets to see them a couple times. I think I was supposed to see them in 2007 but I either couldn't make it out that night or the show got cancelled. Then I was going to see them again in 2013 with Belphegor but that whole tour got cancelled at the last minute. I can’t remember if I had a ticket to that show but I was gonna go, I swear. I think they may have played here in 2011 but if they did I didn't make it to that show for some reason. Even though I really don’t like their new album I’ve loved their previous three; to the point where when I did my top one hundred albums countdown a couple of years ago I put their 2013 album Κατά τον δαίμονα εαυτού at number 15.
I was surprised how many people were at the Opera House to see them. I don’t know if it was the Toronto metal community banding together to support them anyways in light of the headliners cancelling, if a lot of people didn’t know that Marduk had cancelled and showed up anyway (their tickets had been refunded so they would’ve had to pay at the door) or if Rotting Christ is a lot more popular than I thought they were. The place wasn’t packed but it was far more people than I’ve seen there before to see other bands on the same scale as Rotting Christ. They honestly exceed my expectations. I’d seen a recent setlist online earlier this week and saw that they were playing a lot of great stuff so I was excited going in. They changed it up a bit order wise but it was still incredible. I had wondered how they would manage the HUGE sound they have on album live and they pull it off. Like I said above, I don’t like their new album but they played really the only two songs I wanted to hear off it: opening the set with Ze Nigmar (which is an awesome opener) and then playing Elthe Kyrie a bit later; which is the best song off the album. It’s quite clear that they’re really fond of Κατά τον δαίμονα εαυτού as well since they still played four songs off it, more than any of their other albums. Even though I said Ze Nigmar is an awesome opener (which it is) In Yumen – Xibalba should be a permanent set opener. The only stuff I didn’t like was the older stuff because I’m not a fan of their earlier albums. And it was too bad that they didn’t play more off Aealo or anything off Theogonia. There are at least a dozen other songs I’d have loved to have heard them play tonight. But how often do you get to hear a set stacked with so many songs you love? After waiting for almost ten years I left VERY happy with what I saw.
Rotting Christ
1. Ze Nigmar
2. Κατά Τον Δαίμονα Του Εαυτού
3. Athanati Este
4. Elthe Kyrie
5. Apage Satana
6. The Sign of Evil Existence
7. ? (an older song I don’t know, possibly The Forest of N'Gai)
8. ? (an older song I don’t know, possibly Societas Satanas)
9. In Yumen – Xibalba
10. Grandis Spiritus Diavolos
11. Noctis Era
12. Χ Ξ Σ'
13. Non Serviam

It's only been a year since this show so not to much has happened since. Marduk successfully booked another North American tour at the end of this past summer and I was actually supposed to see them last week. But I was so tired from cosplaying at a fan convention that I skipped it, even though I had a ticket. They played at a venue WAY smaller than the one they were supposed to play during this tour and smaller than the one they played at in 2011.
