I’ve never been the hugest Legend of Zelda fan. In fact, the last Legend of Zelda game I played was Ocarina of Time back in summer of 1999. As life went on I moved away from Nintendo. I really didn’t like the art style the Wind Walker on GameCube and I never looked back from there. But I loves videogames and I loves videogame music so I figured I’d go to this anyway and maybe catch something I’ve missed over the last twenty years.
Aside from the main theme the music in Legend of Zelda games never really stuck out to me. The only songs I have on my computer right now are some random stage music like Forest Temple from Ocarina of Time, which I knew were way to obscure for a show like this to play. I have a few other tracks from a few other games that my brother gave me years ago but honestly whenever they play I have to pause whatever I’m doing and check what the hell it is. So what I’m saying is that almost everything that was played at this was completely new to me. It was all good music but nothing that really jumped out at me. The only parts that really got any sort of a “pop” from me was whenever the main theme appeared in any of the medleys (which was a lot) and when some finally familiar music appeared in the Link to the Past medley. Dark World from that medley got the best reaction from the crowd all night. There were other times the crowd got pretty excited for sounds but it was all foreign to me.
The videos playing on the screens were all really good. They gave me a good idea of the story for whatever game they were representing. And aside from the messages from the three important figures in the Legend of Zelda (creator Shigeru Miyamoto, producer Eiji Aonuma and music composer Koji Kondo) there was no awkward talking between songs, which was one complaint I had with the Final Fantasy symphony the last time I saw that.
Overall I still had a fun time and I really want to scour eBay now for a copy of A Link to the Past. This concert didn’t hit me on the levels that the Final Fantasy symphonies or Video Games Live do but I expected that due to my unfamiliarity with the series.
