Deafheaven
Support: No Joy & Indian Handcrafts
Date: Friday September 19th, 2014
Venue: the Opera House in Toronto, Ontario
T-shirt worn: Suffocation 'Breeding the Spawn' and a grey sweater
I showed up just as Indian Handcrafts were finishing up. They were a two-piece (guitar & vocals and drums & vocals) that I didn't get to see enough of to form an opinion of.
No Joy was on next. At first I thought they were going to be terrible but they ended up being very good. They obviously listen to a lot of My Bloody Valentine, but that's cool. There segues between songs were a mess of feedback and tuning but I actually enjoyed all that cacophony. It's probably the closest I'll ever get to seeing and earlier 1980's Sonic Youth concert. My only complaint was a lot of their songs had odd structure and felt incomplete. With most bands it’s verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-extended chorus. With them it was verse-chorus-verse-chorus…that was it. But to tell the honest truth I actually liked them more than Deafheaven.
Deafheaven came on after a mercifully short switchover. I know they get a lot a hate but I think they're pretty good. The mix was a bit messy and the vocals were a little hard to hear but I actually thought that was better. I would've preferred a change in the song order or some surprises but whatever. Maybe one more song would’ve been good, since they played for less than an hour. But I can see anything longer really damaging George’s vocal chords so I understand. There were actually stage divers (which I haven't seen at a show in years) and a lot of hot girls.
Deafheaven
1. Dream House
2. Sunbather
3. From the Kettle on to the Coil
4. Pecan Tree
5. Unrequited

Follow up:
Deafheaven have only gotten bigger and bigger since this show. They've played Toronto a few times since and I saw them again in 2015 at the same place and the venue was freaking PACKED. They back it up though. I haven't heard anything yet but I'm expecting a new album announcement any day now.
No Joy was a great surprise at this show. I've since bought a few of their albums and they've all been great. I saw them live again this past February and it was a good show.
Indian Handcrafts are the only band I haven't seen or heard of since this show, despite them being from less than an hour away from me.
