Vista Chino

T-Shirt worn: Sepultura "Beneath the Remains" and a green Keswick dinner jacket
We showed up later and missed most of openers Black Pussy. I had no real desire to hear them since I find any band that has the p-word in their name isn't very good. What did hear was boring. They reminded me of the bands from that Almost Famous movie. Just their whole pseudo-wannabe seventies arena rock look: skinny jeans, long straight hair, Gibson SG guitars, nice shirts. And they had a guy playing the organ. I don't like the organ. I don't know their songs but the last song was the only one I liked. And their drummer was funny
Vista Chino was awesome...as long as they played Kyuss songs. It wasn't just me. The crowd sat on their hands during any of the new songs (except Dargona Dragona) and exploded for the Kyuss ones. I'd imagine I was one of the few who've heard the new album. But really...the new songs suck next to One Inch Man and Gardenia. The band sounded awesome. Mike Dean is a beast of a bass player and had a wicked stage presence. He was the highlight f the show. Watching him made me want to see Corrosion of Conformity some day. The rest sounded great but the vocals were too loud in the mix. I always liked that on album their vocals were a little more in the background and for the first few songs they were. Then the sound guy (very noticeably) turned them up during Dargona Dragon and they were too overpowering for the rest of the show. The crowd was really tame too but it was all thirty something's.
There are some things I’d change. There are other Kyuss songs I like a lot better but John Homme wrote them so I know they’ll never get played. Whitewater is one of my favorite Kyuss songs, and Odyssey is one of my least favorites. So I didn’t like how they stopped Whitewater halfway (after it was done the heavy part) and went into Odyssey. And they paused a bit too long between songs, especially during Asteroid/Supa Scoopa and Mighty Scoop and Thumb/Green Machine. They should just play straight between those songs. But those are small gripes. I know the guys in Vista Chino will never get back together with him either, so I’ll take this for what it was. The closest I’ll ever get to seeing Kyuss.

I really do miss Vista Chino...even if I only miss them for being a nostalgia act for one of my all-time favourite bands. They seemed to be riding the wave fine around this time and it's surprising that they dissolved/went into hiatus shortly after this tour. But I wonder if there were more legal problems with Josh Homme?
