I tried to show up to this show a bit later than the advertised set-times because every show I’ve been to at Coalition has started later than advertised. But I still got there forty-five minutes before the first band hit the stage, which was fine because I was able to catch up with my old apprentice Nathan. Malphas went on at around ten o’clock and they weren’t too bad at all. Musically they were crusty punkish rock that reminded me of later-era Darkthrone but their vocalist was really good. Very anguished sounding screams. I liked their faster songs but their mid-tempo songs kinda bored me. Their last song sounded like it had to be a cover.
Klarg were really cool. I was worried at first about the whole “playing in their underwear” thing but they were wearing boxer-briefs so it wasn’t too bad. But like I said: they were really cool. The closest band I can compare them to is Grave Upheaval and other uber-underground dank atmospheric death metal. But their songs had a little more character and their sound wasn’t quite as muddy. They sounded very familiar but I don’t think I’ve ever heard them in my life. They only played for twenty or so minutes and I honestly could’ve stood through an hour of them
I was going to go see another band called Health play tonight in Toronto but when this tour was announced and I saw my friend Dan’s band Nucleus (from Chicago) was playing I decided I’d rather go see them instead. Then went on shortly afterwards and I got right up to the stage in front of Dan. So yes Dan, the idiot in the Pikachu shirt was me. I don’t usually like getting so close at shows but I was surprised that being that close to the stage they still sounded perfect; further proof that Coalition is the best venue in Toronto. They were a lot more technical than the previous two bands and sounded really great. The singer did announce their song titles but I was kinda drunk by that point and didn’t copy any down. But I did by a shirt afterwards!
Nucleus
1. Insurgent
2. Swarm
3. Cube
4. Extirpate
5. Cantos
6. Starflyer
I’ve heard Blood Incantation before but I was honestly more impressed by their album covers than their music. But live they were really fucking awesome. I don’t know what their fourth song was called but it was REALLY cool. It was really late though (almost quarter passed one in the morning) and I could tell that poor Nathan (who’d been up since four the previous morning and had had a lot to drink) was about to pass out on the floor.
Blood Incantation
1. Starspawn
2. Hovering Lifeless
3. The Vth Tablet of Enuma Elish
4. Vitrification of Blood pt 1
5. Mephitic Effluvia
Great show. I’m really glad I went. There were maybe fifty to seventy-five people there but that’s where death metal shows shine. All four bands were really dank, underground variations on death metal that brought something different to the table. I actually really liked all the bands and this was one of the better shows I’ve been to this year. I just wish Coalition had better beer selection. I’m so sick of craft crap.

It hasn't been that long since this show so not much has changed.
I bought Blood Incantations album Starspawn shortly after the show and it was a fucking beast of an album.
Nucleus are still riding the wave.
I can't even remember Malphas.
Klarg was the band of the show. It settled in afterwards how awesome they were. At the end of 2016 when I was listing my favourite performances of the year they came in at number two. I've seen them twice since: this past February and a few weeks ago. I go to shows just to see them. They've become my favourite local band. They're actually the first time that I've even said I have a "favourite local band".
