Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Support: Xylouris White
Date: Friday September 25th, 2015
Venue: the Danforth Music Hall in Toronto, Ontario
T-shirt worn: plain black
I've whined aboot my ordeal seeing Godspeed You! Black Emperor a lot in the last year and a half. You can read all about it here, here, here and here. But tonight was the start of me being able to put all that behind me once and for all.
I literally got to the venue the second Xylouris White started. Like, I walked through the door and the singer said, “hello, we’re Xylouris White”. I saw them open for Swans earlier this year and was really impressed by them. Then I bought their album and was really disappointed. But I knew that they were much better live than on record. So I was looking forward to seeing them again. I don’t know any of their song titles because the singer spoke with a thick, Greek accent. My notes have titles like "Bends in the Wind", "Culta Residual", "Short Sousta" and "Living Grace". Then I look at the songs on their album and those are none of them. They did play part of Pulling the Bricks and some other stuff I recognized. But anything from the album was expended on greatly and much better live. They did one song (which I heard him call Culta Residual) that was really awesome and isn’t on their album. Godspeed You! Black Emperors one bass played Thierry Amar joined them for their last two songs but it didn’t really add anything to their music. They played seven songs and were really good.
My god this crowd was full of losers. I'm a self-admitted "hipster" but now I know why y'all hate us so much. I hates us too. SHUT. UP. YOU. DUMB. FRENCH. BITCH.
There was literally a fifteen-minute changeover before Hope Drone started up. But then Hope Drone went on for fifteen minutes as Godspeed You! Black Emperor slowly took the stage. I don’t know what to say. They were incredible. That’s really it. Nothing they played was bad at all. I guess I would have liked it the drone between Peasantry or ‘Light! Inside of Light!’ and Piss Crowns Are Trebled had incorporated my favorite part (which is the four minute single note drone that breaks up Lambs Breath and Asunder, Sweet). But whatever. It would have been nicer if they were louder. I overheard most people saying as they left that it was one of the loudest shows they’d ever seen but I didn’t think so. I guess I’m accustomed to it and going deaf. Probably more so the latter. It would have been nicer if they were louder too so they could drown out the stupid bitch behind me that took it upon herself to talk every time things got quite enough that she could be heard. Seriously; I don’t care if you’re at a post-rock show or a metal show, shut the fuck up. The new song was really good but it sounded to me to be a small part of a bigger piece. It sounded like a last half.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
1. Hope Drone
2. Storm (Lift Yr. Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven and Gathering Storm)
3. Peasantry or ‘Light! Inside of Light!’
4. Drone (sort of Lambs Breath and Asunder, Sweet…but not really)
5. Piss Crowns Are Trebled
6. Sleep (They Don't Sleep Anymore On The Beach and Monheim)
7. New song
8. Mladic
I can’t say much more. My favorite band ever leveled everything tonight and I’m going to see them again Saturday.

I won't say much now because as I said in my original review: I was seeing them again the following night.
