Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Support: Xylouris White
Date: Friday September 25th, 2015
Venue: the Danforth Music Hall in Toronto, Ontario
T-shirt worn: Sepultura ‘Beneath the Remains’
I got to the venue much earlier than last night because I had to figure out how to get Ryans ticket to be waiting for him at Will-Call for him and I wanted a t-shirt. I haven’t bought a shirt at a concert in years. I got a large, but it’s a hipster large…which means I need to lose a little more weight.
They were playing Book of Souls over the P.A. before the show started! I can’t escape that album. It haunts me wherever I go!
Xylouris White came on after about twenty minutes and at least opened with a different song (called Bells). But then the rest of their set was exactly the same as the previous night. Which wasn’t bad because they’re really good. But I just wasn’t as in to them as the night before since it was the same set. All my guesses at song titles from last night remain the same ("Pulling the Bricks", "Culta Residual", "Short Sousta") but I think “Culta Residual” may actually just be called “Residual”…if that’s even the title.
I met up with Ryan during the ten minutes it took for Godspeed You! Black Emperor to start up Hope Drone. That particular song was a lot better than the previous night. It was already awesome but it was even awesomerer. I was a little worried when they played Storm afterwards and then went into the new album. It was still fucking awesome but I didn’t want to get exactly the same set as last night. They added some samples to the beginning of Peasantry or ‘Light! Inside of Light!’ that were really cool and I wished they’d put on the album. Then they went into Moya and I was like…I’ll die now, goodbye. That was fucking awesome and I really hoped they’d segue into those harmonics from BBF3 afterwards but instead we got ANOTHER new song. But I didn’t really like this one too much. It kinda bored me. When the Sad Mafioso… started I too was sad because I knew the set was drawing to a close. So it was awesome but I wanted more.
1. Hope Drone
2. Storm (Lift Yr. Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven and Gathering Storm)
3. Peasantry or ‘Light! Inside of Light!’
4. Drone (sort of Lambs Breath and Asunder, Sweet…but not really)
5. Piss Crowns Are Trebled
6. Moya
7. New song
8. The Sad Mafioso…
It’s hard for me to say which set was better. I think both were equally awesome. Night one was delivered with a lot more ferocity but night two had a better version of Hope Drone and Moya. In the end I can finally put the disastrous trip I had early last year behind me and forget about it. I didn’t need reaffirmation but these two shows confirmed what I already knew: Godspeed You! Black Emperor is the best fucking band in the world.

What a great weekend this was; seeing my favourite band TWICE. These two shows were magical and special and are still two of the best shows I've ever seen. Godspeed You! Black Emperor can do no wrong.
In a strange twist of irony I just got my copy of their latest album (as of this writing) 'Luciferian Towers' today and it has both the "new songs" they played that weekend on it, now with titles: Bosses Hang and Anthem for No State. I can't remember well enough which was which one these two nights but Anthem for No State is a little boring on record so I can only imagine it was the new song they played at this show. I said in my review for the previous nights show that the new song "was really good" and Bosses Hang is the best song on the new album so that was probably the new song they played that night. But fvck, for all I know they played two totally different songs those nights two years ago and I'm an idiot. Who cares: LISTEN TO GODSPEED YOU! BLACK EMPEROR!!!!!
I wore the t-shirt when I met Luke Skywalker a year later:
