Origin & Krisiun
Support: Aeon, Alterbeast, Soreption, Ingested
Date: Saturday October 3rd, 2015
Venue: the Mod Club Theatre in Toronto, Ontario
T-shirt worn: plain black under a Green Bay Packers sweater and toque (team spirit or Toronto weather?)
I almost didn't go to this show. The weather was shit and dreary and it put me in a shitty mood. But it was go or spend time with my family...
I got to the venue the second Ingested started up. They were your typical new age slam death metal band. They had a few cool riffs but I wasn't really interested. Their normal singer had an emergency that prevented him from being at the show so their one guitarist was singing. But that meant they were short one guitar. I don't know how that affected their sound or my enjoyment of them. And I probably never will because I honestly can’t see myself ever wanting to listen to them again. They played five songs in aboot twenty minutes and the only titles I caught were the Divine Right of Kings and Skinned and Fucked.
Soreption were up next and they were minus a bass player. That wouldn't have mattered so much if they had two guitarists. They did okay but whenever they broke for a solo the sound was pretty empty. And I think they may have been tech-death so I'd imagine bass was pretty integral to their sound. They played six songs and they sucked. The only title I can remember was Reveal the Unseen.
Alterbeast were unable to make this date.
I'm pretty sure all of Aeon was on stage. They had a singer, a drummer, a guitarist and a bass player. But if you ask me any death metal band with only one guitarist is missing a guitar player. They were actually really good. Especially at the beginning of their set when they played either one nine-minute song or three three-minute songs seamlessly. They reminded me of a less technical Origin and their singer was really funny. I only got a few song titles (Kill Them All and Blessing the Priest) but they played maybe eight songs?
It was after Aeon that I realized that I'd never even heard of any of these bands. I thought I was pretty in-tune with what is going on in underground death metal but I guess not. I think I may be bored with death metal. The young kids were eating it up though.
Krisiun were missing their singer so they played as a drum and bass duo. No, they didn't. But that would be funny. So Krisiun were one of the three reasons I came to this show (the others being Origin and it being a Saturday). I've seen them twice. Once opening for Obituary in 2009 and it was awesome. The second time on the first Conquerors of the World tour with SepticFlesh in 2012 and it was terrible. Bad sound plagued that second show more than anything but regardless this was the "rubber show". They definitely sounded awesome tonight but their songs just didn't grab me like they did in 2009 when I first saw them. Probably because they were touring for Southern Storm that show and that's all I ever really liked by them. I did really like the song Vengeance’s Revelation. The crowd was nuts during their set. Like, the pit was vicious, barely ever let up and got more and more crazy as their set went on.
Krisiun
1. Ominous
2. Combustion Inferno
3. The Will to Potency
4. Vengeance’s Revelation
5. Vicious Wrath
6. Ways of Barbarism
7. Blood of Lions
8. Scars of the Hatred
9. Ravenger
Origin were one of the first uber-br00tal death metal bands I ever got in to so they've always had a special place in my heart. Even if their last album was terrible (it was the highest ranked album in 2014’s “angry Adam, waah-waah-waah” thread) and they've faded from my memory. They play Toronto frequently but for one reason or another I've never seen them. So I guess this show was a long time coming. The crowd was so nuts in all the bands leading up to them that I thought this place was just going to explode for Origin. Maybe everyone was outside smoking or something because when Origin started up it was rather tame in comparison. After a few songs though things did pick up and got pretty crazy. But I think the place was crazier for Krisiun. I make so much fun of tech-death and noodle-core bands that I shouldn’t like Origin. But they up the br00tality when they play and lower the gay. So they were pretty awesome tonight. I recognized everything they played but I’m bad with song titles. It looks like they cut Lethal Manipulation (The Bonecrusher Chronicles) and Implosion of Eternity for some reason. Whatever. The highlights of the set was Saligia and the Aftermath, as I expected them to be. I really wish they hadn’t played Redistribution of Filth and played something else from Echos of Domination instead. Oh well. The mix was a little poor though and I had a hard time hearing some of Paul Ryans sweeps. But even still the dude was insane. And he goes unnoticed but Mike Flores is and insane bass player too. They really impressed me. They really seemed to impress the eighteen-year-old Japanese girl wearing Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz’s dress in the pit too. That may have been one of the sexiest things I’ve seen in a while.
Origin
1. All Things Dead
2. Thrall:Fulcrum:Apex
3. Expulsion of Fury
4. Purgatory
5. Wrath of Vishnu
6. Saligia
7. Staring from the Abyss
8. The Aftermath
9. Redistribution of Filth
10. Portal
11. Unattainable Zero
I was glad in the end that I went because Origin and Krisiun were both really great and Aeon was a nice surprise. It was probably one of the craziest shows I’ve been to and despite being right on the edge of the pit I didn’t get hurt (+1). And to reiterate what Jason Keyser said before Wrath of Vishnu: selfie-sticks at concerts can suck a dick.

This was an okay show. Origin were pretty awesome so it was worth coming out to. They released a new album this past year that reinvigorated my liking the band. Jason Keyser has finally come in to being the bands singer and I expect good things from them in the coming years.
I really haven't thought of Krisiun since this show. They may or may not have released an album since.
I got one of Aeons albums that Christmas as a gift and it was so bad. I couldn't even listen to it the whole way through. It was just boring death metal to me. I was very disappointed.
I haven't even given any of the other bands a thought since this show.
