Negură Bunget
Support: Dynfari, Grimegod
Date: Friday October 16th, 2015
Venue: the Hard Luck Bar in Toronto, Ontario
T-shirt worn: the Black Dahlia Murder 'Nocturnal'
I got there early and Grimegod ended up going on fifteen minutes late. There were plenty of tables occupied by single persons. It was pretty funny (to me) that when they started up the only person standing near the stage was the drummer from Negură Bunget. But have you ever heard of Grimegod? Me neither. They started out okay but dear God was their sound ever terrible. The second song was pretty bad too. They played a grand total of two songs and were on for maybe ten minutes. One of the single worst performances I've seen in my life. Remember, these guys were part of the touring PACKAGE, not some locals the promoter threw on to bring s bit better gate. These guys came with Negură Bunget all the way FROM ROMANIA and played for ten minutes. Terrible.

Dynfari came on shortly afterwards and they didn't have to do much to be better. Musically they were really good (the bass was a bit high in the mix) but vocally they were pretty terrible. The cleans were almost bearable (almost) but the growls were god awful. It was pretty funny (to me) that a base hit in the baseball game being played in the bar got more excitement then they did. They played maybe seven or eight songs and the only title I can confirm is the title track from their newest album.
It's been a bit of a running gag, Negură Bunget cancelling this tour. But as far as I know they've only had to cancel one tour before (the one last spring) for a very legitimate reason that plagues many small European bands coming to North America (working VISAs). I do know that their current singer was unable to make this tour (because of VISA issues) and the singer of Grimegod was filling in. But I wouldn't know any of the members of Negura Bunget anyway. The only consistent is the drummer and when I saw them three years ago it was a totally new bunch of musicians other than him. Much like tonight's show is a totally different bunch of musicians other than the drummer. And that did kind of throw me off tonight. Especially since they didn’t even have a keyboard player on this tour or anyone playing any of those strange organic/traditional instruments. They were just playing to a backtrack off a tablet for all the keyboards and other sounds and since that’s a big part of their sound that was…lame. They still sounded excellent except a little bit of crackly bass that plagued every band all evening. I wasn’t as in awe of them as I was the first time I saw them three years ago. At that show I really had no idea who they were and had heard maybe one song. I knew what to expect going into this show since I’d even seen the setlists beforehand and knew most of the songs. And really they played pretty much anything I’d want to hear by them except Țesarul de Lumini. They could have cut Ţara de Dincolo de Negură and Hora Soarelui and played that jam. It’s actually a crime that they didn’t play it. They played really the only two songs off the new album that I liked (Nămetenie and Schimnicește) and surprisingly I really enjoyed Împodobeala Timpului, which I’ve always called "the Gypsy Song" and was the song that turned me off the new album entirely. The highlight was Dacia Hiperboreană, much like it was when I saw them before. Such an awesome song.
So while I wasn’t as blown away as I was three years ago I still really enjoyed them and go see them again on their next tour that doesn’t get cancelled.

Sadly, Negura Bunget had another massive North American tour booked for this past spring and I was due to go, but their drummer/heart of the band took his own life a few weeks before the tour was to begin. The tour was cancelled and I think it's safe to say that the band is over.
I was very sad.
