Dethklok
Support: Mastodon, Converge, High On Fire
Date: Saturday, October 23rd, 2009
Venue: the Sound Academy in Toronto, Ontario
This was one of those shows that I really only went to because it was on a weekend. I make a special rule that since I work nights and don’t want to miss too much work for show I’ll go see most bands on weekends, even if I’m not a huge fan. I wanted to see Mastodon, despite not being to high on their newer stuff, I do like Dethklok even though the shtick had worn out on me, but I really wanted to see High On Fire again, even though they were first billed. However, me being the eternal idiot I didn’t check the start time on my ticket, and showed up after High On Fire and Converge were both done. I do know that High On Fire were playing Fury Whip, Blood From Zion, Waste of Tiamat, Frost Hammer and Rumors of War on this tour. Converge I’m not too upset about missing, I heard they weren’t that great.
I showed up about five minutes before Mastodon took the stage. This was during the tour for Crack the Skye where they were playing the album in its entirety. So I knew what to expect for the first half of their set. I’d heard they weren’t that great but I thought they sounded awesome and the visuals were really cool too. The encore consisted of a short, reverse chronologic set from their other three albums. I’m one of those douchebags who are usually like, “they lost it after Remission, why aren’t they playing Ole’ Nessie, this is bullshit” but that’s how I feel. The crowd completely died during the Bit, which was unfortunate seeing they were really hot for everything else. It was like going 100MPH for over an hour then hitting a brick wall. I love the Melvins but I’ll admit that it wasn’t a very good cover. And I think 95% of the people there had no idea what the hell it was.
Mastodon
1. Oblivion
2. Divinations
3. Quintessence
4. The Czar
5. Ghost of Karelia
6. Crack the Skye
7. The Last Baron
[encore]
8. Circle of Cysquatch
9. Aqua Dementia
10. Where Strides the Behemoth
11. Mother Puncher
12. The Bit (Melvins cover)
Dethklok were up after a video with the “band” and Eddie Riggs from the upcoming Brutal Legend game. Video’s of the cartoon band performing were played, of course, and I haven’t seen much outside of the first season but I think there were a lot of original ones made for the tour. But I spent most of the time watching Brandon Small perform. They guy is actually a pretty wicked guitar player. And Gene Hoglan on drums. I think this may be the only time I’ve seen him live, even though he’s in every band. They sounded awesome. Black Fire Upon Us, Murmaider and Go Into the Water were probably the set highlights for me. But anything from the first album was a lot better than the second, with the exception of Black Fire Upon Us. I’d say Mastodon should’ve been the headliner.
Dethklok
1. Deththeme
2. Bloodlines
3. Burn the Earth
4. Hatredcopter
5. Black Fire Upon Us
6. Birthday Dethday
7. Duncan Hills Coffee Jingle
8. Dethsupport
9. Awaken
10. The Gears
11. Murmaider
12. Thunderhorse
13. Go Into the Water
14. Fansong

This show seems like it was a lot longer ago than eight years. But it was. I remember it was probably one of the coldest, crappiest nights I've ever seen in an October. I believe it was raining. And the venue was right on Lake Ontario. So it felt like a mid-winter storm. I find that funny because right now we're in probably one of the warmest Octobers I can remember (2017). Thank you, El Nino!
I know Dethklok have released another album since this but there have been a lot of problems between Brandon Small and the network the show was broadcast on that have kept it from being an active entity for the last five or so years. I don't think if they came back now anyone would care. They were perfect for their time but their time has passed.
Mastodon went on to alienate their fans more and more over the years and I grew even further away from them. But this past year they released a very good album and a very good EP and I've somewhat been brought back into their camp. They play live here at least once a year and for the first time since this show really I think I may want to see them live again.
Converge actually released an album in 2012 called 'All We Love We Leave Behind' that I actually really enjoyed. But then they disappeared too. I think they have a new album coming out before the end of 2017 though.
High On Fire soldiered on in the years after this. I was actually supposed to see them open for Meshuggah last October but I didn't feel like going and I sold my ticket. Matt Pike has reformed Sleep since this show and I did see them in early 2016. I've heard they have a new album in the works and I'm far more interested in that.
