Pallbearer
Support: Tombs, Vattnet Viskar
Date: Friday October 24th, 2014
Venue: Lee’s Palace in Toronto, Ontario
T-Shirt worn: long-sleeved Green Bay Packers shirt
I really only went to this show because I was so burned by Belphegor cancelling their tour. The same day it was cancelled I saw this show was coming so I bought a ticket to this. That’ll show Belphegor.
I left my house really late and showed up just as Vattnet Viskar were finishing up. Tombs were up pretty quickly afterwards. I’ve only ever heard the Path of Totality album and I've only listened to it three or four times at that. So I think I may have recognized a song or two. They're pretty much the harder side of post-metal. Imagine Isis if you stripped away all the atmosphere. They were pretty good but it was a bit much after forty minutes. It really all sounded the same. Very angry

The changeover for Pallbearer was one of the fastest I’ve ever seen since they really didn’t do much of a soundcheck. And even when they were testing an individual instrument the rest of the band was usually letting feedback ring. That was kind of cool. I don’t really know anything by them so I didn’t know what to expect. They had great instrumentation and were definitely heavy. But once the vocals kicked in I was completely turned off. I’ve heard they have the problem of putting the vocals too low in the mix and they didn’t do that tonight. They were high in the mix and sounded terrible. And they blew a mic during the third song so not only were they terrible, they were filling the venue with some nice crackling. It was a little better when the bass player sang but he didn’t sing too much. And the leads by the guitar player with long hair weren’t very good either. I was not impressed. If they were just instrumental I probably would’ve liked them better. I actually left towards the end of Foundations. I’m sure they played more.

Follow up:
I've been to close to two hundred concerts in my life and I can count on my one hand the amount that I've never stuck through to the end of; this being one of the few. I think something was up in my head that night because I just COULD NOT get into this show. Tombs were really a bit too much. They weren't good actually. And Pallbearer? Well what more can I say that I didn't say three years ago.
Vattnet Viskar released an album in 2015 that ended up being one of the best albums I heard that year, so I really regert missing them this night.
