I've been looking forward to this article.
Metal Injections 40 Albums Celebrating Their 10th Anniversary in 2017
I don't look as fondly back on 2007 as I do 2006. But there are "off years" from time to time. There's a lot of stuff on this years list that I'm well aware of but never listened to. I think 2007 was the year deathcore broke. So there's a lot of that garbage on this years list.
But there are a few that impacted me in one way or another:
Arch Enemy - Rise of the Tyrant: the only Arch Enemy album I've ever listened to and it does have a couple of songs I liked (Blood On Your Hands, The Day You Died). My opinion of Arch Enemy has always been that Michael Amott could be doing so much better and this album suffered because of that opinion.
Beneath the Massacre - Mechanics of Dysfunction: I fucking hate this album. A friend told me to buy it because they sounded just like Origin...they didn't sound a fucking thing like Origin...
the Black Dahlia Murder - Nocturnal: the first BDM album I ever listened to and still in my opinion their best. Some of their best songs are on here. Awesome album from start to finish.
Darkest Hour - Deliver Us: I never cared for the album too much but Doomsayer is still one of the greatest opening tracks I've heard (to an album or a concert) in me life.
Dethklock - the Dethalbum: for a "joke band" this was a fucking great album!
Devin Townsend - Ziltoid the Omniscient: this is a tough album for me because to me it marks the turning point in Devins career to lower quality. I'm in the minority with that one. But he broadened his fanbase with this album and I don't think it's been for the better. That said; there are some great songs on here (Hyperdrive, Color Your World and the Greys).
Dream Theater - Systematic Chaos: I've never been a big fan of this band but I actually really enjoyed this album and liked seeing them on tour that summer for it.
Hellyeah: HELLYEAH!!!
Machine Head - the Blackening: you may still love it or you may have grown to hate it; but at one point I'm sure you all were listening to this album. I still think it's a great album and still the best thing Machine Head has done. Halo may be tired and overplayed now but in 2007 it was mint.
Municipal Waste - the Art of Partying: MW don't really put out bad albums so this is another good one. I saw them on the tour for this with At the Gates and they stole the show that night.
Neurosis - Given to the Rising: it took me over two years to get around to this album. It's really not very good. The only part I've ever enjoyed is the lengthy drone in Distill (Watching The Swarm).
Nile - Ithyphallic: Nile are another band that don't put out bad albums but they tend to get forgotten by time. This is no exception. I really liked the speed of this album.
Nine Inch Nails - Year Zero: this was far from the best Nine Inch Nails album but was nothing to scoff at.
Pig Destroyer - Phantom Limb: this might be my least favourite PxDx album but it's still got some doozy moments.
They left out some really good stuff in the article though:
Anaal Nathrakh – Hell Is Empty, And All the Devils Are Here: this was the first Anaal Nathrakh album I ever heard. I remember my friend found it on the internet somehow and he was like "dude, check this shit out". It was the craziest music I'd ever heard in my life. It still is some of the craziest stuff music I've ever heard in my life.
the Angelic Process – Weighing Souls with Sand: this is one of my all-time favourite albums but no one's heard of it.
Behemoth – the Apostasy: I'm surprised Metal Injection missed this one. Behemoth were just starting their uprise into metal infamy when this album came out. Thing was I didn't think it was a very good album at all; especially following Demigod.
Dawn of Ashes – the Crypt Injection: not metal but this is some really harsh shit.
Deathspell Omega – Fas: Ite, Maledicti, in Ignem Aeternum: the same friend that found Anaal Nathrakh found this album too and gave me a copy. I'd never heard music like that before and I still haven't heard too much like it.
iwrestledabearonce: Laugh all you want I still like iwrestledabearonce. I haven't heard the last two albums but I loved the first few. There's some awesome shit on here.
LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver: not metal but an incredible album none-the-less.
Marduk - Rom 5:12: this may be one of Marduks best. The mid-tempo songs are really fucking awesome.
Mayhem – Ordo ad Chao: some people like this band. I don't. This album is okay.
Ministry – the Last Sucker: Ah, what was to be "the last Ministry album". It was far from their best but it would've been a damn fine way to go out. But the tour for this album killed that aura before the band came back less than three years later.
Nadja - Touched: I think Nadja released or rereleased thirteen albums in 2007. But this is the best thing they've ever done and is a must for drone fans.
Nightwish - Dark Passion Play: I could care a less about this album but it was pretty important and talked about at the time of its release.
Paradise Lost - In Requiem: this was a solid album from Paradise Lost. I saw them opening for Nightwish on tour that year and left after Paradise Lost. They're such a great live band and it's too bad North American audiences don't get to see them more often.
Rotting Christ – Theogonia: I think this was my AotY for 2007. I LOVED this album. And their following two got better and better. The opening two tracks on this album The Sign Of Prime Creation and Keravnos Kivernitos are so good and there are a couple others on here (Enuma Elish, Gaia Tellus and He, The Aethyr) that should get played more often.
Type O Negative - Dead Again: Type O's swansong. Not their best but they didn't put bad albums out. Some of the songs on this one were a little on the long side but when they hit their climactic hooks they really hit hard.
Ulver – Shadows of the Sun: a very dark, depressing album but very good. An album like this makes Ulver abandoning their black metal roots okay.
Virgin Black – Requiem: Fortissimo: so now we've officially been waiting for part three in this trilogy for a decade. WTF happened to these guys? This is a great album.
Vital Remains – Icons of Evil: I liked the intro and the first song.
And I know there's a lot more I may have forgotten.
