First time at a new, small club that opened in Toronto a few months ago called "Baby G". It may be the smallest club I've been to. It's probably the same size as Soybomb H.Q. (R.I.P.) but if doesn't have the half-pipe in the middle of the floor. And it has an actual "bar" with the same craft beer infecting every show I go to anymore. Your a-typical hipster club.
The first band was either called Sprawl, Sprawls or the Sprawls. They sounded like [any indie rock band]. Nothing offensive to my ears but nothing I care to listen to again. Their songs were the bass player sang lead were way better, but that was only two out of seven songs.
The next band MIMICO wasn't that bad at all. They were an indie-synth band. The synths were pretty wicked. Even their singing was pretty good and I'd see them again.
I first saw No Joy opening for Deafheaven a couple of years ago. They really impressed me and their albums have since impressed me even more. But I can never make it out to seeing them live. They play Toronto frequently (they're from Montreal) but I usually find out about shows after they've happened. I’m pretty sure they had or have a bass played but they didn’t tonight. Instead they had a laptop playing the bass tracks. Which didn’t sit well with me. It was nice to have bass but people give mainstream artists shit all the time for having backing tracks and DAT tapes; here was a band playing to about fifty people doing the same thing. Regardless they still played really well. It was very loud and chaotic, just how I wanted it to be. I decided to get right up to the stage and the sound suffered a little bit up there (I think there were background vocals playing from the laptop over the PA as well) but it didn’t matter. I wanted to get hit by a wall of noise (I did) and I could still make out all the songs. They were really good and I'll definitely see them again. BAND OF THE YEAR ov da show.
