My lady, and 2 of our friends, finally got to take a much needed 3 day vacation this past week. Ended up staying in Northwest Mississippi. Which is like 30 minutes from Memphis. After a night of gambling and everyone but me consuming a bunch of mixed drinks we all wanted much slower and cheaper day two of the trip. So off to Memphis.
First stop was Sun Records.
We did the tour. I took way too many pictures and it was worth the visit. I do wish the tour focused a bit less on Elvis and a bit more on the other Sun artists. But I also know that Elvis draws fans worldwide to the place. The tour group before us was made up of about 50 people from various areas of eastern Europe. It is a bit odd to be in the unisex bathroom pissing. And look up over the toilet and there is a Johnny Cash platinum record.
After the tour, and the reason why I am sticking this in pro wrestling we all went to eat at the fairly new Jerry Lawler Bar and Grill. It is right down from BB King's bar on Beale street. Got lucky and found parking a block away that was only $5 for 24 hours.
First off some pics.
Lawler kept a throne at the Memphis arena for years. So couldn't pass up to get a pic in one of the things I saw each week on TV.
Now I remembered that Lawler held the AWA world title. But didn't think he would own two copies of the belt.
Pretty sure this is the Unified World title. No clue why Lawler owns one.
The Southern Heavyweight title, that Lawler held 27 times and I saw on TV every week for decades.
Lawler and his first tag team partner, pretty sure this is when he was working the outlaw fed over in West Memphis Arkansas.
Slammies and various other stuff. The place had stuff all over. Including 30 robes and jackets hanging from the ceiling and on the walls.
Last Labor day weekend, when this bar opened for the first time,I did video and commentary work at a show in North MS. Where Jimmy Hart gave Jerry Lawler the pictured megaphone for the bar.
I know he is kind of unknown/forgotten but Tojo was the most evil heel ever, when I was like 5 to 7.I love that Lawler made space for a tribute to a guy that more younger fans show know about.
Lawler's various regional hit 45s. They had a bunch for sale. But I wasn't paying 15 bucks for a 45.
The men's room door. The lady's room door says Queens,I was hoping for Puppies ,and has a crown. Sadly the men's room on the inside is a normal bathroom.
There is pics of Lawler and posters from events he worked all over.
Jerry Lawler is of course a huge comic fan. The little bit I got to talk to him a few years back was mostly about comic books. When the bar opened he had his 66 Batmobile there.
For what felt like 30 years every week I would see an ad for Fireworks City with Jerry Lawler. But I could never go since it was near Memphis and at the time I lived 12 hours away on the MS gulf coast. So it was a neat touch to me to see this prop from one of the ads.
As y'all can see the place is packed with stuff most wrestling fans would love to see in person. All over the walls is WWE PPV posters and WWE Superstar 8x10s. Oddly not many of the posters or 8x10s are signed. But being on Beale street and being a celeb eatery I expected the food to be average at best and to be expensive.
I got what the menu called "The King's favorite Slam Burger" which was two patties plus cheese. A huge serving of well seasons steak fries and a drink. The burger was damn good. Cooked exactly like I wanted it.My lady got some BBQ pork,I don't care for BBQ but I tried a piece and it was pretty good. My meal was 12 bucks hers, which included the BBQ plus cole slaw and pork and beans and drink, was 10 bucks or so. Not bad prices.
Gotta give this place a good grade. The food is above average for a ok price. The service was damn good. And if you are a southern wrestling fan the place is like Mecca.
